Glennwood Elementary ~ Where Learning Takes Flight

Holly Brookins, PhD, Principal ~ Summer Clayton, Assistant Principal ~ Jill Tolsma, Instructional Coach

Hello Glennwood Families,

We are very excited about Field Day tomorrow! I wanted to say thank you in advance to Coach Meg and parent volunteer Timothy Cox for all the hard work and planning that has gone into creating a fun day for our students. Thank you also to all the parent volunteers who have signed up to work at Field Day. We appreciate you. (Please see more details about Field Day instructions for families below.)

We request that all parent volunteers who are working at Field Day tomorrow please sign in at the office once you arrive tomorrow. Field Day is closed to all visitors and parents who are not signed up to work at Field Day in order for us to properly manage the security of all visitors on campus and better ensure the safety of our students and staff.

If you've served on GL PTA, SLT or as a Room Parent or volunteer this school year, the GL Staff would like to invite you to enjoy donuts and coffee on the last day of school after Community Circle as our treat. Please RSVP by Friday, May 19 if you are able to join us. We would like to make sure we have enough treats planned for all of our amazing parent volunteers, so your RSVP helps greatly.

We only have one more week of school left next week. Wow! It has been such a great school year, and I know our students are excited about SOARing into summer. Thank you for all you have done to help make it such an awesome year!

Warmest regards,

Holly Brookins, Ph.D.

Principal

Glennwood Field Day is TOMORROW!

Field Day is TOMORROW assuming there is no rain, in which case it will be on Monday, May 22. Please note: if you are not a volunteer at Field Day, parents will not be permitted to attend due to safety reasons with a large crowd. Staff need to be able to monitor students easily. We are still looking for volunteers in several slots. If interested, please see sign-up HERE. All volunteers will need to check in at the front office upon arrival tomorrow.

There will be water activities in the afternoon but the kids should not get completely drenched. Closed-toed shoes are recommended as there will be running activities. We encourage you to apply sunscreen on your child before school and send them with a change of dry clothes, socks, hat/sunglasses (if needed), and a labeled water bottle.

Students will be receiving their Field Day T-Shirts during Crew on that morning. We look forward to a fun-filled day in the sun! Thank you for your support!

PARENT VOLUNTEERS - YOU'RE INVITED!

If you've been on GL PTA, SLT, a Room Parent or Volunteer this school year, the GL Staff would like to invite you to enjoy donuts and coffee on the last day of school after Community Circle as our treat. Please RSVP by Friday, May 19 if you are able to join us. Thank you!

Important End of the Year Update from Nurse Beth

This school year has gone by so quickly. I find it hard to believe we are in our last days. It has been such an honor to meet all of the students in the Glennwood community and a joy getting to know many of them.

For students with medications at school, I will be available to return the medications all next week. You can find me between 8 and 8:20 AM at the East door on Joyce Parris Lane. I will also be available each afternoon until 4 PM. Anytime during the school day is also an option. I am NOT able to send medications home with your child. If any of these times or days are not optional, please contact me to make other arrangements. If you are unable to pick up, please let me know by email or phone. Any medications left at school on the last day will be discarded.

For next school year, if your child will need medication at school, see below for the link to medication administration forms and health care plans. Health care plans and medication forms must be renewed each school year. Please note that any prescription medications needed at school require the form to be completed by the prescriber.

Classroom Help for Ms. Thaker, Glennwood's Speech-Language Pathologist

Ms. Thaker would love some help during the teachers' post-planning period (May 30/31) to assemble adapted books and TEACCH task boxes for students in our adapted curriculum. Ms. Thaker received a grant this year to create a library of adapted books and materials for students in special education, and needs help laminating, binding, and assembling books, and sorting learning materials into kits. If any crafty parents have an hour or two to help with that process, please email Ms. Thaker at hthaker@csdecatur.net.

Please collect any items left at the Lost and Found area before Friday May 26. The last pile was removed last Friday after Community Circle, since it was overflowing and not claimed.

This coming Tuesday, May 23, 2nd graders and their families will gather in the auditorium at 8:30am to celebrate students at the annual Moving Forth Ceremony. This celebration is a Glennwood tradition, and parents and special family members are encouraged to attend.

The ceremony will be followed by a student picnic at Glenlake Park from 10am-1pm, which families are also welcome to attend. Students will walk from Glennwood to the park with their class, and will enjoy a pizza lunch, King of Pops, and plenty of time to play with friends and classmates. They will return to school in time for a regular dismissal.

We still have a few unfilled volunteer roles for the picnic, including a photographer to capture candid shots as well as parents to help serve lunch from 11am-12pm. Please sign up to assist HERE, if you are able.

Extra Mile Awards

Students: Do you know a teacher or CSD employee who has gone “the extra mile” this year? Nominate them for the CSD Extra Mile Award! The Extra Mile Award is an annual award that allows students to show appreciation for the teachers or staff they feel go above and beyond what is expected of them.

Students (not parents) at any grade level can write an essay describing how their teacher (or staff member) goes the extra mile (parents can help younger children write the essay). The essays should be detailed and describe how the employee goes above and beyond.

Click here to submit a nomination. The deadline is May 31.

These awards will be presented at the CSD Opening Day Celebration in July.

Glennwood Families!

Please complete this survey to help us best plan for and implement communication structures that will keep our Glennwood families informed of the important happenings in our school community. All schools will be conducting a similar survey.

The results of these surveys will be shared with other school and district leaders to help inform areas of strength and growth throughout the district.

This survey should take you approximately 10 minutes to complete and will provide us with valuable information about our communication platforms, frequency, and content. Thank you for your support.
