State Science Fair Update...

This year Carpenter was well represented at the State Science Fair. Ava Savage and Kayla Dang took their project, "Meals for Mice", all the way to San Antonio. Unfortunately, they did not place, but what a wonderful experience!

One of the speakers read this quote from Dr. Seuss:

"In the places I go there are things that I see that I never could spell if I stopped with the Z."

Kayla and Ava showed that with hard work and determination you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. So even though the 2016 Science Fair season is over, Ava and Kayla have set the standard and Carpenter will be on that stage at State in 2017!

Way to go girls!

Joseph Hernandez and Luella Clines had their art selected to represent Carpenter at the Youth Art Month exhibit located at the Sockwell Center. Their art will be on display until May.

All students entering the 7th Grade this fall semester must have the following:

DTP booster within the past 5 years, and MCV vaccine. Please note that your child will not be allowed to receive a schedule or to attend classes in August until proof of all required immunizations is provided to the school. Many doctors and clinics may be unable to accommodate the rush of last minute request for immunizations, so it is best to get them early. You can avoid delays during registration or on the first day of school by providing proof of updated immunizations prior to the end of this year.

School Menu App

Search and favorite all the schools your family attends and see school menus for 30 days at a time! If you want, mark your favorite meals with a star and see when they're coming up again.

Cowboy Character

We have all heard the story of the boy who cried “wolf.” He lied so many times that when the wolf really was after him, no one believed him. The boy lied one too many times and suffered a grave consequence.

Aristotle, great Greek philosopher, once said: “Liars, when they speak the truth, are not believed.”

If we expect people to believe us – if we expect others to take us at our word, we have to earn that trust by always speaking the truth. If we tell lies – if we “stretch the truth,” we may not be taken seriously when it really counts.

RODEO Tip of the Week

Stand Up Straight

How many times have you told your child, “Sit up straight! Quit slouching!”? Research shows that in adults, a straight spine increases confidence, while "a slumped posture leads to more helpless behaviors," writes Emma Seppala from the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) at Stanford. Hunching or slouching makes research subjects feel more stressed, and makes them more likely to give up in the face of challenge. Trying harder to sit up straight may help students feel happier and more confident.

Take Action: Set an alarm or a timer that will remind you to stand or sit up straight once an hour. BONUS benefit: Research subjects who make an effort to improve their posture ALSO tend to improve other areas of their lives - for example, they tend to watch less TV and eat less junk food!

PISD Policy Regarding "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day"

Dear Parent(s):

In the event your child plans to participate in the “Take Our Daughters and Sons To Work Day” program on April 28, 2016, we wanted you to be aware of the approach and practice of the Plano Independent School District. Each day a student is not in school the absence results in loss of instructional time and the absence also impacts the budget by resulting in loss of funding.

Drug and Alcohol Prevention Information: “Did You Know?”

Did you know approximately 25,00 people overdosed and died from prescription drugs in 2014? You can help keep unused and expired prescriptions from being abused. The DEA holds a drug “take back” day where you simply bring any unused or expired medications to a site and drop it off. It is FREE and it is EASY to do! On April 30, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, you can stop by any collection site nearest you and drop off your medications. There will be sites at PSHS, PESH, PWSH and Clark schools this year. I have included the website if you need a site closer to home.

Please consider cleaning out your medicine cabinets and help us fight the battle of prescription drug abuse. Together, we can make a difference!

Flu Information from the Department of State Health Services

In 2007, the Texas Legislature passed House Bill No. 1059, also known as the Emily Lastinger Act which requires all public school districts to post immunization information prominently on the school district's website, if the district has one. The legislation was driven forward because of Emily Lastinger, a vibrant and healthy three year old who died from influenza. She was not vaccinated with the influenza vaccine. In an effort to expand immunization awareness, especially for the flu, we ask that you please post flu vaccine information on each individual campus website in addition to your district site.

The district health website has been updated to include suggested links and information, as well as basic reminders. Flu season runs thru mid- May.
