Pinehill School News 7 July
7 July 2021 - Week 10, Term 2
Message from our Principal
Kia ora tatou,
Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori. Happy Matariki everyone!
Matariki is a specific celebration in Aotearoa New Zealand and honours our season of winter under our stars.
Matariki is not one specific day, it is a season heralded by the rise of the Matariki cluster in the eastern sky in winter. Next year Matariki will be an official public holiday in NZ and it has been confirmed this will take place on 24th June 2022.
At Pinehill School, we have honoured the tradition of Matariki in classroom teaching sessions, as well as holding our very first Matariki whole school shared breakfast which is this Friday 9th July. All children are asked to bring a small plate of food to be shared with their class. Please can you ensure that all ingredients are labelled due to some children having food allergies. We will gather under the taumaru (field courts shade top) at 10:00 am and hope many of you can join us.
The Kapa Haka group will open our Matariki breakfast and house leaders will have speaking parts to guide us through the breakfast. A big thank you to Ashleigh Maaka for planning and organising our first Pinehill School Matariki whole school shared breakfast.
The Resilience Project
All of our classrooms are participating in The Resilience Project teaching and learning sessions. The lessons are based on Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness. We recently held an informative parent afternoon on The Resilience Project and how this can also filter through to home.
Please see the below parent and community information forwarded on for us to share as we near closer to the holiday break.
The Resilience Project Information for Parents:
To continue supporting your parent and carer community over this holiday period, Martin Heppell has created a short clip about the importance of sleep to support students to come back to school well-rested and ready to learn!. To view the clip please Click here.
For more information on sleep & device management please click through to our latest blog “Reclaiming control of your electronic devices”
Enjoy the school holiday break coming up. We look forward to seeing everyone back for Term 3, Monday 26th July. We will welcome our new students and families to Pinehill School with a whakatau on the first day back at 9:00 am in the hall. You are all welcome to attend.
Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini
Success is not the work of one but the work of many.
Ngā mihi nui,
Carla Veldman, Principal
Headlines
Our swimming programme for 2021 begins in the first week of term 3 at the Millennium Institute. Each class will have a 30 minute swimming session every week for six weeks finishing the week of 6 September.
- Yrs 3 and 4 on Tuesdays
- Yrs 1, 2, 5 and 6 on Wednesdays
The Millennium Institute will provide qualified instructors to work with your child in their purpose-built learner pool.
Swimming is part of our Physical Education programme and it is expected that all students take part. If for reasons of illness your child cannot participate, please send a note to your child’s teacher. It is important to remember that payment for these lessons comes out of your activity fee.
We would appreciate your activity fee being paid prior to the start of this programme.
Please ensure all swimming gear comes to school on the correct days and is named and stored in its own bag. Please bring goggles. Long hair MUST be tied back.
We would appreciate it if parents were able to set up routines to ensure that swimming gear comes to school on the correct day, the timetables can be found on the school website, click here. Children will not be able to ring home from the office to request that swimming gear be brought to school. Let’s work together to continue to develop responsibility in our children.
