Garbage In, Garbage Out
The pace and access to information has grown at an exponential rate ever since the advent of the internet. The shear amount of media content that humans are exposed to through social media apps, internet feeds, streaming services, and television is an overwhelming avalanche that can feel crushing.
Our kids feel this acutely as their generation is immersed in technology to communicate socially and connect from an entertainment standpoint. One of the best ways we can help our students, and ourselves, is to remember the old saying "Garbage in, garbage out". Too much of anything can lead to unhealthy consequences. The same can be said for the information we consume. If we consume too much negative, emotional, or anxiety producing content the overflow from our brain will spill out somewhere else in our lives.
Communicating with your child(ren) around the content (Garbage In) that they are consuming will help safeguard the messages they internalize (Garbage Out). Modeling this same behavior in your consumption is a way to not only help your own mental health but also set up a sense of what is expected for your child(ren). You will find some resources to help navigate this exponential world we live in throughout this newsletter.
