Message from the Principal

Hello Prairie Families,

It's been a packed week at Prairie! We kicked off Step It Up on Monday with an assembly that got our learners very excited! The funds that we raise from Step It Up will be donated to the American Heart Association and will also go toward the funding of our new playground. Learners did their very best on MAP testing this week. The winter data point gives us another piece of data to consider when planning for instruction. We will MAP test again in the spring. We finished the week off with an all-school assembly this morning where we did a cheer led by our Junior Coaches, learned about using positive language on the playground and in our school, played a whole school game called Do This Not That, played a teacher vs. student game called Ro Sham Bo Relay, and wrapped it up with the Puma Way (led by our 5th-graders). We will work on our positive language goal at every recess by catching students using positive language to add to our school-wide total. When we meet our goal, we will have extra recess time!

The new Prairie playground is getting closer to becoming a reality! We are on track to have a playground installed this summer. After meeting with a variety of vendors, we narrowed it down to our final vendor that we will work through the playground process with. Our vendor will be Lee Recreation. A representative from Lee Recreation joined us for the PTA meeting on Tuesday evening to present two playground designs. From there we elicited feedback from those that were at the meeting to come up with a single design that incorporates concepts that parents and staff really want to see in our new playground. Please take a look at the "Playground" section below to provide your feedback on the new playground by Wednesday, January 22nd. At that point, we will pass the feedback along to our representative from Lee Recreation to develop the final design, which will then be reviewed by insurance. We are so excited to have a new playground at Prairie.

Have a great weekend! Enjoy the extra day with your families!

Carly Solberg

"Not Enough Apologies" - Community Event on Trauma

The School District of Waukesha Student Services Department is hosting an event at South High School on Wednesday, January 22nd. They have partnered with Wisconsin Public Television/PBS as well as over 10 community agencies who specialize in supporting mental health, children, and families throughout Waukesha County. We will be screening a WI documentary about trauma - "Not Enough Apologies." This documentary explores how adverse childhood experiences can result in changes in the brain, leading to cascading behavioral and mental health problems. It also discusses how service providers across Wisconsin are working to be responsive to trauma in efforts to change the trajectory for affected children.

Here is an outline of the evening's events:

5:30-6:00 - Resource tables for all partnering community agencies, refreshments (popcorn, cookies, water)

6:00-7:00 - Introduction, Documentary Screening

7:00-7:30 - Panel Discussion to process the film, answer questions

7:30-8:00 - Dismissal with resources tables open

Childcare will be provided! We hope you can attend this important event. Special thank you to board member Amanda Roddy for assisting with the planning committee for this event.

Yearbook order forms

Yearbook order forms are going home with students today. Yearbooks were not ordered with picture packages in the fall.

There is an option to order online at with order code 46811T. Paper and online orders are due by February 19, 2020.

As we approach mid year, many parents are receiving attendance letters from our office. These letters are generated automatically through Infinite Campus when your child hits either 10 days of tardiness or 5 days absent (any or all of a day), and are intended to keep you informed of your child's attendance. Upon exceeding 10 days of absences (any or all of a day), you may be required to submit a doctor's note for any future absences to avoid the absence being marked as truant. In that case, you would again be informed in writing.

We encourage you to get a doctor's note for any medical or dental appointment your child may have requiring any absence from school. A "medically excused" absence does not count in the total number of days absent. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the office.

Congratulations to January's artists of the Month!

This month, we have 1st grader Landon Harris and Kindergartener Lucy Bayless. Neither of these kids have been at Prairie very long, but they both are excellent behavior role models, show kindness towards their classmates, and demonstrate the Puma Way every day. In addition, Landon and Lucy are super creative and hard-working young artists.
