An Update from Perkiomen Valley Middle School West
A Word From Mr. Creeden
This past Tuesday, January 10th we were privileged to host The 2023 "Artists in Residence" assembly. This assembly was for the entire 7th Grade student body (East and West) and the 8th grade band students from both schools. Jill Haley, composer, oboist and her guest musicians performed a medley of her musical selections based on our National Parks. She also premiered "Two Owls and The Vine." This piece was written expressly for the Perkiomen Valley School District. The music is based on The Kukhusëwim Legend of the Ancestral People of the Lenape/Delaware tribe.
This coming week will be our annual West Spelling Bee. See more about the Bee and much more below.

Keep Your Eye on the Birdie!Badminton is a racquet sport played on a court using racquets to hit a birdie (shuttlecock) across a net. Students in Mr. Weygand and Mrs. Burg's physical education classes will be the first to explore this popular game at West!. The badminton lessons will include an introduction, rules, grip, shots, and serving. Playing badminton can improve one's hand-eye coordination, flexibility and balance because of the agility that's required to aim correctly and move to hit the birdie when it comes to your side of the court. It can also help to improve cardiovascular endurance, as it is an excellent form of aerobic exercise. | Tell Me a StoryStudies show that reading and storytelling with babies and children promotes brain development and imagination, develops language and emotions, and strengthens relationships. Students in Mrs. Soupik's sixth grade Family Consumer Science classes discussed good storytelling practices and concepts during a unit on early child development. Afterwards, they practiced reading children's story books to each other! | Scientific Notation StationsStudents in Mrs. Nehila's eighth grade math classes enjoyed a scavenger hunt activity to review their unit on scientific notation. Scientific notation is a way to write very large or very small numbers in an abbreviated way, making it easier to work with these numbers. Working in small groups, the students rotated through a series of stations where they defined vocabulary terms and solved equations. |

Chess Club Chess, which requires wit and intellect, is played by millions of people across the globe. It is one of the finest indoor games. Chess is played on a 64 square board of black and white. The aim of the game is to conquer the opposite king. On both sides, there are pawns, knights, bishops, rooks, and the queen to formulate a strategy to attack the opposite army in a war. Once the opposition king is blocked and doesn't have any option to make a move, the game ends. West students from all three grades are welcome again this year to join eighth grade social studies teacher Sean Murphy for Chess Club! The novice Bobby Fischer's will meet every other Wednesday, after school for friendly competition where they will gain experience and skill. | Debate Club Join the PV West Debate Club. Learn the art of constructing, supporting, and discussing arguments. These skills are an integral part of life in a free society. In Debate club students will engage in a variety of discussions centered around group selected topics. They will learn to argue both their own perspective and the perspectives of others. Students will use evidence based practice to back up arguments as well as learning about logical fallacies and cognitive biases that may lead to poor argument construction. Debate club will take place on the second and last Tuesday of each month. Join us for our first organizational meeting on December 13th from 2:30 - 3:45. We hope to see you there. | C.A.U.S.E. Nurse Notes - Physical and Dental Exams
Parents of 6th grade students, please know that you are required to submit a physical form for your child during this school year. In addition, if your child receives any immunizations, please submit those as well. Prior to the start of 7th grade, your child will need to receive the Tdap and Meningitis vaccinations, so now is a good time to get those immunizations!
Parents of 7th grade students are required to submit a dental form for your child.
The school physician and the school dentist will be at Middle School West in the Spring of 2023, and your child will be seen by them if the proper form is not handed in prior.
Kids & the Tech/Life Balance Webinar
Now more than ever, technology plays a vital role in all our lives. It keeps us connected and can educate, illuminate and entertain. With increased use, kids can develop an unhealthy dependence on tech as an escape or way to avoid life’s challenges.
Gaming, social media, and streaming entertainment can be fun and relaxing, but moderation can easily slide toward dependence. We’ll provide strategies to help our kids develop a healthy relationship with technology, and skills to practice self-care.
Presented in partnership with the School District of Springfield Township.
