Hopkins Hill
Husky Happenings Family Newsletter
Week of April 4, 2022
Good Morning, Families!
Don't forget Spring Book Fair April 4-8. During the day on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, during your child's library time, parents may come to shop at the book fair with your child, something we enjoyed doing pre-covid. The evening of April 6, is Evening Book Fair during which families can come to shop from 6-7:30 and do an activity. Thanks to the PTA for sponsoring Book Fair events. If you are coming that evening and plan to do the PTA activities, please complete the registration linked on the PTA flyer so they have an idea of how many items to purchase. Your child's library schedule and the PTA flyer for Evening Book Fair events are below this section.
If you haven't shopped for your Hopkins Hill Spirit Wear, yet, please consider doing so. The PTA is sponsoring this fundraiser. On Friday, Mrs. Marran brought in the items she purchased. They were lovely and very well made. She agreed to model some of them (Thank You Mrs. Marran!), so see the pictures below. The only problem you are going to have is what to choose. There are lots of varieties and colors - long sleeve, short sleeve, hoodies, zip up hoodies, joggers, and even a beach towel. Here is the link to the Spirit Wear store: https://www.anchorfamilydesigns.com/hopkins-hill
Finally, we are so proud to have been a part of a very special event on Friday during which Coventry High School was named a Unified School Champion. Their recognition was delayed because of COVID, but on Friday they were celebrated for the work they have done. And, the elementary schools were able to take part with each elementary school sending two students to carry a unified banner specially made for us. Each school participates in Special Olympics Unified Programming, Hopkins Hill included. More to come about that in future newsletters. This week, though, we want to celebrate Coventry Public Schools working together. Pictures are below and please click on this link to a Turn to 10 featured story!

See below for information on K registration for the 2022-2023 school year. One important note, if your child attends Coventry Little Oakers Pre-School at Washington Oak, they are not automatically rolled over to K in their home school. Little Oaker parents don't have to do a full registration but must complete certain steps. A letter went to Little Oaker Pre-K families from the district late last week and I have added that letter below this section. If you have a child entering K next year and they are not enrolled in Little Oakers PreK at Washington Oak, you must follow the full registration process.
We still have several Celebrate Hopkins Hill T Shirts in K and 1 sizes available for purchase. If you are interested, please give us a call.
RICAS April testing dates are below. It is important for children to be well rested. Rhode Island does not have an opt out option. Click here for the Rhode Island Department of Education RICAS page.

Criminal Background Checks for Volunteers: If you would like to volunteer at PTA activities, a criminal background investigation (BCI) is required for all school volunteers. PTA is looking for volunteers to help with Book Fair.
Parents can obtain a BCI from the state Attorney General's Office - here is the link with the location and hours of operation:
https://riag.ri.gov/i-want/get-background-check (BCI checks are done at the Cranston Location and unless you prefer otherwise, the basic BCI is fine.) Please send a copy of the BCI to us at school when you receive it.

Feinstein Good Deeds Shoutout: We have a couple of new Safety Patrol students who just started this week. I want to shout out some existing safety patrol students who welcomed the newbies, unprompted by any of the adults, showing them the ropes including the neat little trick for attaching the pawbucks they use to their belts. Another shout out goes to several students who, on their way in from recess, brought in items left outside in order to put these items in Lost and Found or return them to classrooms if they were labeled. Nice job, folks!
Hopkins Hill Celebrates 60 Years: Dates are set for music and fashion through the years - a mini celebration each month! We can't wait to see what staff and students will be wearing!
May 6 - 90's Eclectic Mix - overalls, baggy jeans, stripes, spiked hair, shoulder pads, Green Day and Nirvana
June 6 - Let's rock it in ALL RED for the day to close out our celebration. How red can we get?!!!
In addition, every Friday is red and white day to show our school spirit throughout the year.
Hopkins Hill Food Pantry: Hopkins Hill operates a free food pantry for families. Pre-Covid, we would have shopping by appointment as well as open community nights. Like everything else, we had to do a covid pivot. What we did last year and will continue to do this year is ask families to sign up for a biweekly pre-bagged grocery delivery, which you can stop or start anytime as long as we have available food resources. You can also call us if you have a short term need or emergency. We use the Coventry High School Transition Program to do our deliveries or bags can be picked up at school. It's usually one bag of cleaning supplies and one of basic food supplies depending on what we have on hand. As you can imagine, donations of items are always appreciated and we do a food drive at the start of each year, before Thanksgiving, and mid winter. Please call us if you need the food pantry or email me - all such inquiries are confidential. We are looking for donations to restock. Please see the flyer below.
Teacher Professional Development Days: Just to give you a heads up, the following is the last teacher PD day: 5/11, with no in person school for children. Teachers will communicate specific information closer to those dates.
