A Peek at Our Week!
August 27-30, 2018
MATH:
2.1 - In our first math unit students are learning to understand place value. We are modeling, reading, and writing numbers to 1000 using base ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. We will learn to skip count by 5s, 10s, and 100s within 1000. We will compare two three-digit numbers using <, =, and >, and record the results of the comparisons. We will also draw picture graphs and bar graphs to represent data and use the data to solve problems presented in the graphs.
2.2 - Our first unit focuses on applying base 10 understanding to addition and subtraction problems. Students will solve problems using concrete models, drawings, place-value strategies, properties of operations and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. We’ll also use picture and bar graphs to represent and interpret data. Lastly, we’ll solve word problems based on money.
3.1 - In our first math unit the students are developing and using an understanding of place value to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. In this unit we will also learn to fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction.
READING:
In our first reading unit our goal is to read with fluency, stamina, and comprehension. Students will learn strategies to tackle difficult words. As we read we will also discover some special techniques that our favorite authors use and apply them in our own writing.
WRITING:
In our first writing unit we are improving our narrative writing. Students are learning to stretch out and magnify their small moment stories by adding details and strong beginnings and endings. We will discover craft moves that authors use to create powerful stories and learn to add these techniques as we write.
WORD WORK:
This week our phonetic focus is on words that begin with s blends (ex: stop, swim, snake, etc). We will build, read, and spell words with s blends in class throughout the week. You can help your child review for the first Word Work quiz on Thursday by practicing what they have learned to spell a variety of words with r, l, and s blends.
SCIENCE:
Students will learn the difference between reversible and irreversible changes. Students will practice sorting cards and learn how to make hypotheses about what they think is going to happen to materials and liquids that are mixed together.
Curriculum Night
We hope you will be able to attend Curriculum Night on August 27 at 6:00 pm. You will get a glimpse into your child’s day as you visit his/her homeroom/reading and math classes. The teachers will review classroom and school policies, procedures and routines at that time. We hope all of our parents can attend!
College Team Spirit Day!
On Wednesday, August 29, CCE will kick off the college football season by sporting college spirit shirts! We encourage your child to wear their favorite college team shirt or colors!!
