West Middleton Update
~Building a Compassionate, Collaborative Community For All~
A few quick updates from Mrs. Krych for January 2020
I can't believe that we are starting a brand new decade, the 20's!! I hope you all had a wonderful winter break. It was nice to have the shorter week last week to ease back into things. Now we're ready to conquer our first 5-day week of 2020! During this week, students and teachers will model and practice our Wolverine Way expectations in all of the common areas. Each grade level will rotate through the different school environments (hallways, cubbies, lunchroom, playground, bus, cafeteria, bathroom and classrooms) relearning what the Wolverine Way looks like, sounds like and feels like. This is an intentional rotation we do after returning from Winter Break in order to be as proactive as possible around our behaviors. Ask your child what it means to follow the Wolverine Way and see if they can tell you about the different teachers who retaught them how to be Responsible, Respectful, Safe and Learners at West Middleton this upcoming week.
Our winter assessment window opens up on January 22nd and teachers will be reassessing students using the computer adaptive assessment, STAR. This is the same assessment students took in the fall and they will will also take it again in the spring. Here is a brief FAQ on STAR for parents if you are interested. Only students who performed below benchmark on the Fountas and Pinnell reading assessment in the spring of 2019 and who continued to be below benchmark this fall will be reassessed at this time. All students will have a Fountas and Pinnell reading assessment in the Spring. Please feel free to contact your child's teacher if you have any questions regarding either of these assessments. Information will be shared with families at our late winter Parent/Teacher Conferences on February 13th and February 18th (more information to follow from your child's classroom teacher).
Finally, we will be having another family night event on Friday, January 10th. Please join us for Cocoa with CoCo on Friday, January 10th from 6:00 - 8:00 at West Middleton in the gym. Popcorn and water will be provided. Feel free to bring blankets, pillow, stuffies and whatever else makes you feel comfy and cozy.
It is my privilege to be the principal of West Middleton and I have HUGE gratitude every day for this wonderful community we have created. Take care of yourselves and each other. We are #bettertogether!!!

Winter Tea & Dress Up Day Closet
Are you looking to clean out closets and toy bins over the winter months? Have your kids out grown some of their dressier clothes or costumes/hats? If so, we'd love to take them off of your hands for our New Dress Up Day Closet. If you have gently worn dresses, dress slacks and/or dress shirts, as well as costumes and fun hats in kids' sizes, please consider donating to them to West Middleton. We have many students who may not have fancier attire for Winter Tea or costumes for special dress up days and we would like to give students the opportunity to choose something to wear from our Dress Up Day Closet. Please drop them off in the main office. Thanks!
Healthy Kids Healthy Schools Gold Award Winner - West Middleton!!
We are pleased to announce that our school has been awarded with a Healthy Kids Healthy Schools Gold Award from Healthy Kids Collaborative of Dane County! This award recognizes the work West Middleton is doing to promote health and well-being for students, staff and families. We are proud of many things that we do at school to contribute to your child’s well-being.
Here are a few of our favorites:
•We have a daily healthy salad bar in the cafeteria
•We provide access to the playground before and after school
•Students have access to stretching breaks during class time
Help your student celebrate by bringing the party home! Grab a healthy snack and head outside for a picnic. Or get up and dance! Check out the Healthy Kids Collaborative’s fun 5-2-1-0 sheets at healthykidsdane.org/5-2-1-0/ for even more fun ideas!
