Eating Disorders
Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating
Three Main Types
There are three main types of eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating. There is a misconception that eating disorders only occur in young females. This is so untrue, in fact, about half of the binge eating disorders occur in males. These disorders affect people physically and emotionally and they are potentially life threatening, but there is treatment. All three disorders can be treated with counseling or psychotherapy but the exact treatment procedures are different for every person. Consult a doctor right away if you or someone you know suffers from an eating disorder. Remember, people with these disorders will almost always deny that they have one. The first step is to accept it, then change it.

Anorexia Nervosa
People with anorexia nervosa starve themselves. They refuse to eat at all or only very little because they see their bodies to be heavier than they actually are. These people deprive their bodies of the essential nutrients that they need to function.
Effects:
- heart failure risk because of slowing heart rate and blood pressure
- osteoporosis
- weakening of the muscles and fatigue along with the possibility of fainting
- dehydration
- dryness in the skin and hair
Bulimia Nervosa
Bulimia nervosa is commonly known as binging and purging. This means that bulimic people will eat a lot of food and then feel guilty about it, so they then rid their body of the food. The most known way of doing this is by forcing themselves to throw up. But, some will also use laxatives.
Effects:
- electrolyte imbalances from continually purging
- gastric and esophagus rupture
- decaying of teeth
- constipation and irregular bowel movements
- pancreatitis and ulcers
Binge Eating
Binge eating is a disorder where people have moments of out-of-control eating. When this happens, they eat A LOT of food, but unlike bulimia nervosa, they don't get rid of it afterwards.
Effects:
- high blood pressure and cholesterol
- heart disease and gallbladder disease
- type two diabetes
