Northeastern is conducting a brief but very important survey on diversity and inclusion to more accurately understand the extent to which students across our global network feel included and respected. The survey gives our community members the opportunity to share their experiences and perspectives and to offer constructive input toward making Northeastern more equitable and inclusive for all. All (On)Board! 5 Ways to Start a New Job Remotely
Starting a new job remotely can be scary and challenging. Gone are the days of having a welcome lunch, seeing your new space, shaking hands, maybe receiving authorization and meeting with human resources. Here are 5 strategies to help as you settle into your new role!
1. Zoom in on Company Culture
Company culture entails how to foster trust, respect and success in the workplace. Think about what makes you productive and how you build relationships.
- How do people share ideas? Gain an understanding of how creativity happens at your workplace.
- How do people ask questions? Are your colleagues quick to ask questions after being prompted? Do questions happen in a 1:1 setting? Understand best practices for asking questions will help you manage your time as well as everyone else’s.
- What is the company's communication style? Do people interrupt each other on Zoom? Are there long pauses in conversations? Pay attention to behavior to understand your workplace’s etiquette and inform your behavior. It’ll help build trust and foster connection.
2. Put in the Work to make Interactions feel less Transactional
Pre-pandemic, you could engage in small talk in the elevator, passing by offices, or even in the office kitchenette. We need personal interactions to build relationships. Many interactions tend to be email, which can be hard. Schedule several 1:1 10-30 minute video meetings with no agenda! Remember, to humanize yourself with your colleagues.
3. Respect Your Colleagues’ Boundaries
Remote work asks people to engage in ways they didn’t previously have at the office. Certainly you may receive a Zoom party invitation or a 1:1 video call. Workers who went remote during the pandemic faced high rates of burnout. If a colleague is unsure about connecting by video, offer other ways to connect. Be mindful of boundaries and preferences and respect their time and comfort levels.
4. Show that You’re Listening
Building comfort can make your colleagues grateful to have you on their side. Try focusing on something that a colleague shared during a meeting. When you communicate that you want to learn more, you’re showing your human side and permitting your colleague to do the same.
5. Find the Connectors
Strategize how you plan to navigate your new environment by identifying a connector who knows all of the key players. Potentially your supervisor or peer can serve as your connector. Consider your first few months on the job an opportunity to build relationships.
