Getting Students Ready for Back to School
ABCUSD schools are set to welcome students back on August 22, 2022. With back to school right around the corner, here are some tips to help get your students ready to return to the classroom.
Start a morning routine - Get your children up at a regular morning wake-up time. Help older children by setting an alarm clock so they can begin to take responsibility for their own wake-up routine.
Get ready the night before - Mornings can be frantic, so have your child choose what they would like to wear the night before. By starting this routine before school starts, your child will learn the habit of planning ahead.
Breakfast and Lunch - Students learn best when they are properly nourished, and beginning this year, all ABC students can get a free breakfast and lunch at school. Menus will be posted on school websites so families can about the options available.
Dedicate screen-free time - Get into a homework routine before the school year starts by allocating TV-free time after-school. Children can use this time to read, write, play outside, or participate in other learning activities.
Bedtime - Return to a set bedtime before the school year starts so your child has the time to get used to the new routine. Sleep is a critical factor in how a child learns at school. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends 9-12 hours of sleep for children ages 6-12 and 8-10 hours for children ages 13-18.
Remember, if you have questions about the coming school year, you can reach out to your child’s school beginning the week of August 15, 2022. Let’s make it a great school year!
Free Breakfast and Lunch
All students can eat breakfast and lunch for free at ABCUSD schools this coming school year. Our Nutrition Services department will continue to provide healthy choices for students that meet all Federal nutrition guidelines. Check your student’s school to see weekly menus. With the global supply chain still strained, menus may change due to unavailability.
Love ABC? Tell a Friend!
Do you love your student’s school? Tell your friends! Through the inter-district permit process, students from areas outside of ABC may attend our schools. Some schools may not have availability, but many have space and would welcome new students. Tell your friends and family about our outstanding, award-winning schools.

COVID-19 Safety - Returning to School
We saw the latest COVID-19 surge this summer, powered by new highly-contagious variants. ABCUSD will continue following COVID-19 safety protocols from the L.A. County Department of Public Health as students and staff return to school. As we look forward to the beginning of school in a few weeks, let’s remember the best ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19:
Students and staff should stay home when they aren’t feeling well
Masking is strongly recommended when indoors or in a crowd of people
Vaccinations continue to be the best way to prevent serious illness from the virus and are now available for all school-aged children
Although ABC classrooms have upgraded air filtration and have at least one portable high-capacity air purifier, we still need families, students, and staff to help keep our schools healthy and safe. As always, we will update ABC families about changes to the County’s COVID-19 safety protocols for school. For more information about the County’s response to COVID-19, or to find a vaccination clinic, visit http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/.
