Super Spike News
September, 2015: Welcome to our first issue!
Dear Parents,
In an effort to meet our overall vision of Success for Every Student, Every Day, RES’s theme for the school year is TEAMWORK. Working together, we have the power to positively influence student growth and achievement. In this vein, as a staff, we will be reviewing one habit each month from Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Covey's work provides a common language that we can model for the children. I encourage you to take time to discuss each of the habits with your child(ren) and give examples of how you incorporate them into your lives. Optimal learning is a team effort, so conveying a consistent message in both school and home will help us move forward in one direction.
Habit 1: Be Proactive
- Proactive people are those who focus efforts on things that they can do something about
- Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions
- Proactive people are responsible for themselves
- WE are responsible for our own behavior
- Proactive people recognize their responsibility to make things happen
- Responsibility = “RESPONSE-ABILITY” (the ability to choose your response)
- Proactive people not only acknowledge their mistakes, but also learn from them
- Covey suggests, “Make a proactive choice to BE happy, genuinely smile”
Wishing you the very best this school year!
Warm regards,
Daneyelle

To celebrate all of that awesome reading, students, who turned in their logs, were invited to our Popsicle party on a recent beautiful day to enjoy a delicious treat and some fun reading time. What a great way to start off the school year!

Third Grade
Third grade is settling into our new routine. We were excited to share our hopes and dreams for this new school year. In math, we finished Topic 2 adding 2 and 3 digit numbers and are beginning Topic 1. In science, we are beginning our first unit of study, Sound. We are looking forward to experimenting with different objects to discriminate their sounds. Some third graders are excited to begin their first year of string lessons. It’s a pleasure working with such positive children each day.

Richboro Elementary School is a happy place to be!
All over the building throughout every day, smiles are reflected from one face to another. We have so much to be happy about, and this fall we are celebrating all of those things on our Wall of Happiness bulletin board by the recess doors. As school opened for the year, and in turn we each felt excited, nervous, enthusiastic, and even a little sad, some students in every grade level took some time to write a little reminder of what makes them happy. Now, no matter how we are feeling, when we walk by the wall, we learn a little about what makes others happy, and maybe even get a little reminder of something that brings us joy that we may have forgotten. This school year, we encourage the children to continue thinking about the things in their life, both in and out of school, that make them happy, and invite them to add happiness cards to our wall as well! They can ask their teacher for a 3x5 card to write on and decorate, or they can even to make one at home with their families!
-Mrs. Aquila
It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness.

Fourth Grade
The fourth graders are very excited about the upcoming Lenape Field Trip On Monday, October 5th to the Churchville Nature Center! The students will learn many facts about the Lenape. They will try to make fire, and make pinch pots out of clay. We will learn how they hunted, cooked, and gardened. We will be able to sit in a wigwam and learn about the Lenape Way of Life. The students will learn a few games the Lenape children would play. We can’t wait to enjoy this awesome trip!

Fifth Grade Flash
Fifth grade has gotten into the swing of the new school year! Our classes our chock full of interesting learning!
In Social Studies we have proved that we are “Smarter Than a 4th Grader”! We are full swing into our Geography Unit! Ask your student if they can recite their Space Address!!!
As scientists we learned that we need to use the Scientific Method to explore and test hypotheses to study the world around us. We are now working with lenses and magnification to be able to observe things more accurately!
Fantasy Football has begun in math class! Learning how to convert fractions to decimals as well as rounding and adding decimals are important skills for the 5th grade math student! First In Math is now up and running! Have your child practice their math skills in a fun and challenging way! Whose class will win the top team trophy???
In Language Arts we are reading and writing with vigor! Learning and practicing new strategies is the 5th grade way each day! Be sure to have your child read every night! Study Island is a great way to have your child practice skills in reading and writing at home!
Until our next Fifth Grade Flash,
Mr. Benson, Mrs. Cicchiello & Mrs. Nack
First in Math
This year, First in Math will again be available to grades K through 6 through the support and generosity of the RSA. The First in Math program is targeted to elementary and middle school students. The program enables schools to form teams who play math games online and earn points for their team by successfully solving problems and completing games. Students’ participation in this program creates great excitement for math and often provides essential motivation for our students.
Last week, students were given a username and password to access their personal accounts. Please encourage your child to begin utilizing this wonderful program at home!
-Mrs. Fitzgerald
Sixth Grade
The sixth grade year is off to a great start! As a team, we decided to focus on influential people across our country every Friday in social studies. On September 11th, students watched a moving video about a man named Welles Crowther. Welles was a true hero on September 11th helping to rescue others from the South tower. Welles had the opportunity to escape the building and instead gave his own life to rescue others. From this video, we have discussed Welles’s inspirational quote, “Everyone who can stand-stand now. If you can help others, do so.” Our hope is that this message will carry with the sixth grade class throughout the school year.
Listed below is a video we watched in school. We encourage you to watch it again with your son or daughter. It will leave a lasting impression!

A signed permission slip is required to attend, permission slips can be found on the Physical Education portion of the RES website or during PE class. All activities will be under the supervision of Mr. Donohoe or another classroom teacher in the RES building.

Beginning Band Lessons Have Started!
We will first learn how to produce a characteristic sound. This may sound a little odd at first, but be patient! Next we will learn where to put our fingers to produce different pitches. Each pitch is assigned a letter and a spot on the music staff. By the end of the month, we will start reading music.
Studies have shown that students that spend more time and effort initially learning a new skill will have better success later and find new skills easier to master. Please ask your child what they learned in lessons and if they need to practice their new skills.
-Mrs. Hintenlang
Special thank you to Council Rock South's marching band for greeting our students and making their day a great one!
