Heritage Intermediate Summer Update
July 2020
Hello Heritage Intermediate Families!
I hope you had a great 4th of July and are finding ways to stay busy, safe, and have some fun. My husband and I have been joined by my teenage cousins this summer so I quickly have found out what it is like to have multiple teenagers, during COVID-19. Nevertheless, we have had some fun times and learned some new board games along with spending a lot of time in the pool. It has definitely been a different kind of summer!
We have had some changes over the summer with our staff, in which I wanted to keep you updated. We are excited they will be joining Heritage Intermediate!
- Ms. Elena Bernstein, 4th Grade Teacher
- Ms. Rachel Knobbe, 5th Grade Teacher
- Ms. Caitlyn Biddle, Reading Intervention
- Mrs. Karrie Fast, Reading Intervention
- Mrs. Beth Kennedy, Literacy Coach
- Mrs. Liz Strickland, 6th Grade Horizons
- Ms. Logan Felder, Music/Choir
- Ms. Jody Fox, 2nd Grade Horizons
- Mrs. Sheila McAlister, School Nurse
- Mrs. Lauren Coldiron moving from 5th grade to Computers
- Ms. Emily Scherbring moving from 3rd grade to 4th grade
- Mrs. Stacey Couch moving from 4th grade to Medical Detectives/Read 180
I am sure, as August quickly approaches, you and your children are filled with mixed emotions about returning to school, especially this year. You may be wondering, what will that look like? We are hoping to have more answers about that later in July from our district administration and Board of Education.
For now, I will say that our team at Heritage is in the planning stages for all the possibilities, and we will be ready on August 24 to welcome your student regardless if it is face to face or in distance learning or some combination of both. We understand that this transition from summer break to back to school will be more difficult than in years past. We are working together as a school, as well as within our teams of teachers, to do everything we can to make the transition as smooth as possible.
Please look for further communication from Heritage Intermediate in the upcoming weeks.
Sincerely,
Jodi Oliver

WSD 10th Annual Back to School Fair
Last year, thanks to over 100 vendors and 26 Corporate Sponsors, we were able to give away over $12,000 in free school supplies to WSD students. As part of the Fair, MoCHIP (Missouri Child Identification Program) representatives will be on hand providing free child ID kits that include a disk with the child’s information, digital photograph, digital fingerprints and vital information necessary for authorities in the event of abduction.
While the event is free, families are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate at the door to Operation Food Search, which serves local families in need. For more information, visit the WSD website.

Summer Reading Opportunities!!
Mark Twain Readers Award Nominees Announced for 2020-21
At Heritage, we have been a strong supporter of the Mark Twain Readers Award program. The Mark Twain Readers Award encourages students in grades four through sixth to explore new literary genres, to recognize excellence in writing and illustrating, and to experience the joy of literature. The purpose of our Mark Twain Readers Award is to provide students at Heritage with a recommended reading list of literature that will enrich their lives and to honor students who make reading a priority. We believe that exposing students to quality literature impacts their future reading habits.
We want to introduce the 12 Mark Twain Readers Awards nominees and encourage every student in 4th and 5th grades to dedicate reading time this summer to begin the process of achieving Mark Twain Readers Award status! The following books are Mark Twain Readers Awards nominees for the 2020-21 school year: 24 Hours in Nowhere by Dusti Bowling, Amal Unbound by Aisha Saeed, Blended by Sharon M Draper, Captain Superlative! by J.S. In addition to the Mark Twain Readers Award program, we are also emphasizing the Truman Readers Award. The Truman Readers Award is for students in 6th grade and encourages students to express their unique voice through exploring new literary genres, communicating with their peers about young adult literature, and honoring authors writing for young teens. The purpose of our Truman Readers Award is to provide students at Heritage with a recommended reading list of literature that will enrich their lives and to honor students who make reading a priority.
We want to introduce the 12 Truman Readers Awards nominees today and encourage every student in 6th grade to dedicate reading time this summer to begin the process of achieving Truman Readers Award status! The following books are Truman Readers Awards nominees for the 2020-21 school year: City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab, Deep Water by Watt Key, Fire & Heist by Sarah Beth Durst, Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes, Imposters by Scott Westerfield, Lifeboat 12 by Susan Hood, Mascot by Antony John, Nightbooks by J. Students who read and pass the quiz on four books can come to the pizza/voting party and students who read and pass the quiz on all 12 books by the beginning of May can earn Mark Twain Master and/or Truman Reader status.
