Family Newsletter

September 9, 2021

Dear Erickson Families,

Tomorrow is SPIRIT DAY! Encourage your child to wear blue and gold (yellow) or Erickson spirit wear tomorrow.

During the week of September 13-17, Erickson will support hunger awareness and collect canned food items to donate to the Bloomingdale Food Pantry and the Northern Illinois Food bank. This is in partnership with the Character Counts Bloomingdale Coalition. Students can bring in canned food items to donate throughout the week and place in the marked boxes in the lobby.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions, comments, or feedback. The best way to reach me would be via email or phone: or 630-529-2223.

Have a great rest of your week!

Stacy Johnston

Virtual Curriculum Night: Thursday, September 16 - 6:00-7:30

Last year we had positive parent feedback regarding the LIVE virtual format of Curriculum Night. This year we will continue teacher led curriculum presentations via Google Meet where parents can join their child's teacher on a LIVE Google Meet as he/she reviews the class curriculum and expectations.

The LIVE Virtual Curriculum Night will be on Thursday, September 16th. There are two sessions for each teacher: 6:00-6:40 & 6:50-7:30. Each session is the same, just repeated for parents who have multiple children in the school.

Fine Arts teachers will share a recorded curriculum presentation and also have an OPEN HOUSE LIVE Google Meet from 4:30-6:00 where parents can "drop in" to virtually to talk with the gym, art, music and library teachers.

The LIVE Meet links will be shared with parents closer to the date.

MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Assessments

Students in all grades will participate in NWEA MAP testing. Teachers will use the information from the MAP assessment to set academic goals with students & determine how to best differentiate instruction. The MAP assessment is administered three times a year (Fall, Winter, & Spring). Besides the MAP test, teachers will also administer a formative reading assessment to students. Teachers will use this information to form guided reading groups & determine how to best support students as they encounter increasingly challenging levels of text. If you have any questions about either assessment, please reach out to the classroom teacher or contact the building principal.

Bloomingdale School District 13 - Going Gold

On Friday, September 24th, Bloomingdale School District will be “Going Gold” in honor of Michael Carr and to support Cal’s Angels. Michael was a student at Erickson and Westfield who lost his very courageous battle with cancer this past April. We invite all students and staff to wear gold that day. Cal’s Angels will have shirts available for purchase and all proceeds will support the effort to raise awareness.

At 4:30 pm on September 24th, we will be hosting a community walk around the pond behind Erickson Elementary. All staff, students and their families are invited to participate.

Registration information to follow!

5th Grade Band Information

Mrs. Metzger has met with all 5th grade students who are interested in joining band this year. They were able to try multiple instruments, and after playing them decided which one they would like to play. Each student received a letter explaining that there will be a meeting at Erickson (in the gym) this coming Monday, 9/13. This meeting is an Open House format running from 4:30 to 7:00 pm, so you can come at a time that is convenient for you. You will get a chance to meet Mrs. Metzger and hear from her how the program works, and you will also have the opportunity to talk to representatives of Quinlan and Fabish Music Company to talk about renting your student’s instrument.

If you cannot make the meeting but are interested in signing your student up for band, please contact Mrs. Metzger either by phone or email (
