March 4-8, 2019
In reading, we just finished the novel Red Kayak. Students really enjoyed this novel, and participated in lots of great discussions and activities. This week, we will be reading the story, "What's the Big Idea, Ben Franklin?" out of our Harcourt book. Students should really connect to this story after all that we have been learning about him in our social studies text.
In fifth grade math, students will be continuing to multiply fractions and solve word problems. We are looking at testing on Friday.
In accelerated math, students will be testing on chapter 5. They also will be completing their transfer task. On Friday, we will be having an extended math period as the accel math students will be taking the PA math test.
In writing, students are going to be writing a five paragraph essay answering a question from the novel Red Kayak as an assessment.
In social studies, we will be finishing up chapter 10 by reading lesson 3 and completing a study guide. Students are doing a great job taking notes and participating in discussions.
In spelling, we will be looking at Greek and Latin roots. Please continue to study the words with your children nightly.
Lowey Bundy Sichol visited our school last week for a very interesting assembly. Sichol told students about Phil Knight the creator of Nike and Nike's rise to fame. Students were extremely engaged. Sichol is the author of the books: From an Idea to Disney and From an Idea to Nike.
This is a belated thank you to all the students for the birthday surprise they had for me. Students decorated my room, wrote cards and even sang to me. It was a huge surprise, and I was really touched by their thoughtfulness. I am lucky to have such a great class.
March Book Report
Now that we completed our green screen book reports for February we are ready to move onto our March book reports. Please make sure that your child is reading a book. I will be sharing this month's book report project with students next week. It will be to design a book jacket with a summary. Students will have directions they are to follow with the point value. These will be due when they return from spring break on April 3.
