News from Mrs. Mankin
Dear Bulldog Families,
Although the year is not ending the way any of us anticipated, it is important for us to remember back to the beginning of the year and then the months following in which our typical idea and routine of school were present. From August through May (even with our new learning format), we have engaged in a variety of learning experiences and created many memories. As a school, and within individual classrooms, we will be taking time this week to reflect upon how much we have grown this year. We realize the importance of providing closure for students and adults so please join us in reflecting upon our year with your child. Some questions you may want to ask your student are:
- What was your favorite part of the school day? Why?
- What learning experience is one you will never forget?
- Who makes you smile: friends, teachers, support staff...?
- Tell me about something that was hard for you at first but that you can now do because of your hard work. #GrowthMindset
We encourage you to take part in the Hamilton Southeastern Digital Spirit Week as a fun way to end our year as a bigger learning community - see the details below. Be sure to share pictures on Twitter, other social media, or even with an email to your student's teacher.
We have created a New Britton plan for the drop-off of school supplies/resources (iPads, library books, and classroom materials). Our specific plan will be emailed to you on Monday, May 18th. We appreciate your help in closely reviewing this plan to ensure a safe and efficient process. We know that we will all need to be extra patient during this drop-off time as our volunteers do their best to assist you.
To stay updated, please be sure to review Dr. Bourff's video message as well as the FAQ section of our HSE website as this does provide answers to many questions and is continuously updated. Our website will continue to be updated throughout the coming weeks as we plan as a state, city, and school corporation for the upcoming school year.
Our priority continues to be making positive connections and helping support your student's social-emotional needs during this time! Please let us know if you need anything. It has been a pleasure to serve you and your student this school year. As always, thank you for partnering with us in education! Stay healthy and safe.
Sincerely,
Lori Mankin
Gorrill Family News-Where in the World is Mr. Gorrill Moving?
As some of you may already know, this will be my last year here at NBE. Our family had the opportunity to take a missions trip last April to a school in the Dominican Republic. While there, we were amazed at the work being accomplished through this school and how its mission was so similar to what we are already passionate about. Through much consideration and reflection we have made the decision to serve at Freedom Christian School as full-time missionaries in the Dominican Republic. We have been working hard to prepare for this next adventure but are saddened to be leaving the NBE family. If you are interested in staying connected, please send an email to scottgorrill@itisforfreedom.com. NBE holds a special place in my heart, and I am thankful for each and every family that makes NBE such a great place!

Indianapolis Children's Choir - Virtual Neighborhood Choir Academy
Dear 3rd and 4th grade NBE Families,
We have an exciting opportunity to be part of the Indianapolis Children's Choir Virtual Neighborhood Choir Academy! This is a program that has been developed by ICC during this season of eLearning. Students will be expected to watch six, lesson videos (5 to 10 minutes each) and practice with rehearsal tracks. Then you must practice on your own and send your video to the Indianapolis Children's Choir by May 29th. I will send the details of rehearsals and process for sending videos. You must email me at kthornsberry@hse.k12.in.us if you want your student to participate. I will email back stating that I have added you to the list. There are permission slips involved so I must communicate with a parent/guardian! I will assign students to either soprano or alto part. Here is the best thing! This opportunity is completely FREE! If you love to sing and you want to get better at singing and get training from some of the best music educators in the state, then this opportunity is for you!!

Helpful Resources from Mrs. Leiner - 2nd Step
During the 2019-2020 school year our students have been actively participating in the Second Step program which is our Social Emotional Learning curriculum which has been taught weekly in the classroom setting. This curriculum focuses on promoting and teaching social, emotional, and academic success. The four units include: Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotional Management and Problem Solving. These are all vital learning skills now more than ever.
This is a difficult time for our students and families and Second Step has provided New On-Demand, Teacher-Led Lessons and Videos along with free resources for families to access Free of Charge. The New On-Demand lessons are in the 3rd section of this link and are taught by Second Step teachers and counselors.
Please visit this link which outlines all the resources and tools Second Step is providing to teachers and families. Please take a look at some of these free lessons for your family.

A Little about Me: I have been teaching for 16 years. This is my thirteenth year at New Britton Elementary. I have been married to my husband Jeremy for sixteen years. I have a 13-year-old son Owen and a 9-year-old son Landon. I have 5 nephews and 4 nieces. I grew up on a farm, so I know how to hitch a tractor to a wagon. :)
What Brings Me Joy: My Lovebugs! My own children bring me great joy! My heart fills with joy when we are at the ballpark, hiking or eating ice cream together. Some other things that bring me joy attending my book club, new socks and baking.
Favorite Food: Mexican Food
Favorite place to visit: Our family's goal is to visit every Major League Ball Park, so one of my favorite places to visit is any baseball park. My favorite so far has been Camden Yards. I also love visiting my family farm and spending time with my parents. The place I really want to visit and hope to this summer is New York City.
