Miller's Firsties

A Holiday Update

We have been very busy these past few weeks really diving into texts that we are reading. We've been learning about character traits and that these are adjectives that describe a character on the inside not the outside! We are still focusing on setting, characters, beginning, middle and end. These are all things that you can talk about with your child as you are reading your favorite holiday stories.

In math we have been working on place value. Identifying the values of digits in a number and drawing numbers with ten sticks and ones. We also are greater than, less than, and equal to masters! Way to go us!

When we return from the holiday break we will begin our middle of the year assessments. Please make sure that as you are reading with and to your child over the break you are talking about some of the important elements in the story. We want all of our students to do their very best on the upcoming assessments! I am very happy with how hard all of the students have been working and how far they have come with their progress monitoring so let's rock these middle of the year assessments!

First grade is making a small skills packet for you to work on over the break. This is NOT mandatory but is a great way to keep up your child's reading and math skills over the two weeks we are off of school. If your child chooses to complete these few things and they return it after the break they will earn a special surprise! I will let them pick from some choices such as a homework pass, lunch with a friend, etc.

Reminders about the rest of the week!

Wednesday is Merry Christmas Charlie Brown Day! We will ring in the holiday season with Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts Gang! If your child would like to dress like their favorite Peanuts character they may!

Thursday is Reindeer Day! We will be doing lots of activities with everyone's favorite animal this time of year! We will also have a small class celebration today!

Friday is POLAR EXPRESS DAY!!! Everyone should come in their favorite Christmas pajamas and get ready to board the Polar Express!

I will try and send some pictures from these last few days so everyone can see all the fun things that we are doing!

Have a great break at home with your families and Mrs. Sulek and I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! See you in January 2016!
