Maryville Guidance News
October 2014
Red Ribbon Week
October is also considered Bully Prevention Month. Elementary schools in Bullitt County have decided to combine these two topics and make Red Ribbon Week simply "Love Yourself." Discussions and work should resolve around loving yourself and making good choices because of it, which include treating yourself and others with respect.
ACTIVITIES RELATED TO RED RIBBON WEEK
BORN TO BE DRUG FREE
As long as staff members do not show off their baby pictures, I am happy to accept answers from staff as well and provide an "adult" prize. It will require that staff does not show or discuss their baby pictures. We have to make it fair :)
Please submit a hard copy of your photo to Mrs. Barron. Make sure your picture is labeled with your name (either on the back of the photo or on the envelope/zip lock bag that contains your photo.) Pictures will be returned.
Essay and Poster Contest
The essay must be on the topic of "Love Yourself and Be Drug Free." The poster can be on that topic or on Bully Prevention. Those are the only requirements.
Final products are due to Mrs. Barron by Friday, October 24th. More information was sent out via email or you can request it from Mrs. Barron.
Last year Maryville fifth grader Dilan Brown won the district prize for his Drug Free Poster. It is hanging outside Ms. Kline's office. Be sure to point it out to students as an example.

SCAVENGER HUNT
A list of tasks will be sent to all classrooms. Classes will need to complete a certain number of these tasks during Red Ribbon Week. Some tasks will be assigned to a specific day, while others will be left up to the classes. There will be more tasks suggested than classes will need to complete, so there is room for flexibility and discussion. At the end of the week, classes who complete the scavenger hunt (hopefully all) will receive a small prize related to Red Ribbon Week.
Some of these tasks include:
Students sign the Drug Free Pledge (required)
Classes create a chalk message outside related to Red Ribbon Week
Read a book related to drug awareness
Read a book related to bullying
Complete a bully blocker lesson (required)
Complete a Red Ribbon Week writing activity
All members of your class participate in the Dress Out Day
Submit ideas for next year's Red Ribbon Dress Out Days
Take a picture of your class participating in Red Ribbon Week activities for the yearbook/facebook page.
Perfect Attendance for the class
We are also going to have an assembly (date and time TBA) with a police officer and his drug dog. One task will be related to this assembly.
Any other recommendations and ideas are welcome!
