The word of the day is "SURREAL". As if we didn't have enough on our plates, we got a bit of snow for good measure!

As we move into an extended break, information continues to evolve, creating some fluidity and an overall experience that is indeed surreal. To be clear, I don't use the word as a negative descriptor. Rather, things are just a bit different and our obligation is to adapt. And as the media is doing it's part to fuel ratings and portray THIS, be assured life at Raleigh Park is more like THIS.

Of course, I know an extended closure presents a level of hardship for many families, especially for those in need of childcare and/or who rely on the school for consistent meals. The District has developed a plan to address the availability of meals to our families (see below). And while we cannot solve the childcare issue, we're working hard to get books and resources in the hands of our students. One such resource is Scholastic Learn at Home, a free online resource designed for K-12 students, providing 20+ days worth of learning journeys that span multiple content areas for the purposes of keeping your students academically active.

Moving forward, as much as I'd like to provide you some personalized updates, the District has asked us to keep messages minimal for the sake of consistency. The Nutrition Services Department will be providing lunch for all students and children ages one (1) and up March 16 – 20, March 30, and March 31 from 11:00a - 12:00p at designated school sites (listed below).

• Meals will be available for all students. Students must be present to be given a meal.

• We will be handing meals out, grab & go style. Cafeterias will not be open for dining.

Summer is coming, and the days away from a regular routine can set students back and take away learning gains from the school year. If students leave school in June and don't read or practice their math skills all summer, they can return in the fall at the skill level they were at back in January. Students then spend the first three months of the school year trying to regain what they had already learned the prior school year. This is called Summer Slide.

How can you stop Summer Slide from happening? One way is to sign up for Camp Achieve this summer! Applications will be sent home soon, pending the approval of our Beaverton Education Foundation grant application.

Here’s how Camp Achieve will work:

• Students will sign up for (2) 3-day minicamps: June 23, 24, 25 and July 28, 29, 30 from 9:30-2:30 daily plus one lunchtime meet-up at a park the week of July 7. Teachers will check in with students at home who are unable to meet up the week of July 7. Teachers will remain connected with their class via Seesaw from June 23 through August 14.

• During the minicamps, students will engage in STEAM activities and prepare for time away from camp - which includes picking out books to take home with them, practicing Dreambox, and choosing a journal. While students are away from school, teachers will check in with them via Seesaw to encourage them to read, complete Dreambox lessons, and write in their journal.

This year, Camp Achieve will be held at Vose Elementary School. Students from Raleigh Park, Raleigh Hills, Montclair and Vose are invited to attend. We will provide bus transportation to the (2) minicamps from a few specific bus stop "hubs". Breakfast and lunch will be provided to all students for free.

There will be a Family Meeting in early June, and a Parent/Guardian is expected to attend one of the available meetings dates. Dates will be sent out in May. At this meeting, we will explain the summer expectations and address any technology questions. We will also check out devices to families who need one over the summer. In order to participate in Camp Achieve, students must have signed Google Permission forms on file at their home school.

We hope you plan to reserve your spot in Camp Achieve! We anticipate applications will be available after Spring Break. The first 150 students to apply from these four schools are guaranteed a spot (pending approval of our BEF application)! Your students will get the opportunity to have a summer-long connection with a teacher who is reminding them to read, write, and think mathematically, suggesting new book titles, and cheering for their progress. Please consider signing up!

What a fantastic first Family Math Night! About 100 kids and parents played math games, solved puzzles, and stretched their brains. A huge thank you to Mathnasium for organizing, Subway for donating sandwiches, and all the volunteers who led activities. We’ll be hosting it again next year!

Below is the draft of the Beaverton School District’s Student Investment Account plan. This draft was developed through extensive community engagement, strategic conversations and partnerships, and consultancy with content expertise. It is the result of more than six months of work both internally and externally and is reflective of the needs of the District’s historically underserved populations, including students of color, emerging bilinguals, and students with disabilities.

Our process for developing this SIA plan began with internally planning in August of 2019. The District spent considerable time in the fall engaging the public both broadly and through targeted focal engagement about the needs of our student population. This engagement work included a district-wide survey, several open community forums (with translation), empathy interviews with focal populations groups, direct feedback session with school-based staff, language-specific community conversations with emerging bilingual families, and other targeted efforts. This engagement yielded over 4,000 data points that encompass the responses of far more actual individuals in the District and was analyzed by an outside consultant to draw out top themes and needs expressed by targeted populations.

Following the engagement work, the District formed three content based convenings. These were gatherings of approximately 20-25 individuals from both community and staff to work through a facilitated protocol of analyzing district data, needs assessment work, and the frameworks in the statute to develop an actionable list of ideas and concepts for consideration. The three convenings were equity, student health and wellness, and instructional. The work of the three convenings was compiled by the external facilitators and then used by a combined group of individuals from all three convenings in a final all-day work session to develop the actionable draft plan for the District.

This final draft was then presented to the community in a second round of broad and focused engagement that included a broad community meeting, and targeted outreach to groups and families representing historically underserved students in the District. These conversations yielded a number of valuable insights and revealed several areas of need that were not addressed in the previous plan. A final internal drafting meeting was used to review and reflect on the insights gained and make final modifications, additions, and deletions to the District’s proposed SIA plan that is attached here.

This Student Investment Account Plan is not just the protection of existing programs or the addition of positions in the District, but is a catalyst for change to the way services are delivered to all students and particularly to those students for whom the District has historically underserved (students of color, emerging bilinguals, and students with disabilities). The investments in class size contained within are used as a way to completely alter the way the classroom teacher allocation works by driving more services to kids in need through a redefinition of the staffing allocation model. The investments in supporting students’ behavioral and mental health needs will drive a complete reform and standardization of the District’s multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) with evidence-based practices.

By leading with racial equity at the core of the development of this plan, we are able to disrupt the system to provide both universal and targeted supports to kids. Additionally, while the plan only contains a small investment defined for recruitment and retention of a diverse workforce, this investment will be used to focus the hiring throughout the implementation of this plan and across the District as a whole so that we are able to ensure that we have a workforce that better represents the racial diversity of our students, families, and community.

PLEASE NOTE: This proposed plan is for the estimated $32.2 million in Student Investment Account funding, it does not reflect the BSD General Fund Budget of $515 million. When viewing this plan, please keep in mind this is one portion of the District funding.

The Beaverton School District is now enrolling for Kindergarten at all elementary schools for the 2020-2021 school year.

Any child who will be five (5) years of age on or before September 1, 2020 is now eligible to enroll for Kindergarten at their designated home school. Online Registration is available for new student enrollment. After the online application has been submitted you will want to schedule a visit to your child's school, prior to the first day of their attending. This visit is important as you may receive ​school-specific forms to complete. ​Parents/guardians will need to provide a birth certificate and immunization record at the time of enrollment.

Each elementary school will offer parents an orientation to find out more about the Kindergarten program at their spring Kindergarten information events. Please check the Kindergarten webpage or with your neighborhood school to see when the orientation is scheduled.

A continuación se muestra el borrador del plan de la Cuenta de Inversión Estudiantil del Distrito Escolar de Beaverton. Este borrador fue desarrollado a través de una amplia participación de la comunidad, conversaciones estratégicas, asociaciones, y asesoramiento con experiencia en contenido. Es el resultado de más de seis meses de trabajo tanto interna como externamente y refleja las necesidades de las poblaciones históricamente desatendidas del Distrito, incluyendo a los estudiantes de color, a los estudiantes bilingües emergentes y a los estudiantes con discapacidades.

Nuestro proceso para desarrollar este plan comenzó internamente en agosto de 2019. Este borrador final fue presentado a la comunidad en una segunda ronda de reuniones comunitarias con un alcance dirigido a grupos y familias que representan a estudiantes históricamente desatendidos en el Distrito. Estas conversaciones produjeron una serie de ideas valiosas y revelaron varias áreas de necesidad que no se abordaron en el plan anterior. Tuvimos una reunión de redacción interna final para revisar y reflexionar sobre los conocimientos adquiridos y para realizar modificaciones finales al plan de SIA propuesto por el Distrito que se adjunta aquí.

Este Plan de Cuenta de Inversión Estudiantil no es solo para la protección de los programas existentes o para la adición de puestos en el Distrito, sino que es un catalizador para el cambio en la forma en que se prestan los servicios a todos los estudiantes y particularmente a aquellos estudiantes para quienes el Distrito históricamente ha desatendido ( estudiantes de color, estudiantes bilingües emergentes y estudiantes con discapacidades). Las inversiones en el tamaño de las clases contenidas en ellas se utilizan como una forma de alterar por completo la forma en que funciona la asignación de maestros en el salón de clases al brindar más servicios a los niños necesitados a través de una redefinición del modelo de asignación de personal. Las inversiones para apoyar las necesidades de salud mental y del comportamiento de los estudiantes impulsarán una reforma y estandarización completas del sistema de apoyo de múltiples niveles (MTSS por sus siglas en inglés) del Distrito con prácticas basadas en evidencia.

Al contar con la equidad racial como el centro del desarrollo de este plan, podemos alterar el sistema para proporcionar apoyos para los niños que son universales y específicos. Además, si bien el plan solo contiene una pequeña inversión definida para el reclutamiento y retención de una fuerza laboral diversa, esta inversión se utilizará para enfocar la contratación a lo largo de la implementación de este plan y en todo el Distrito en general para que podamos asegurarnos de que tenemos una fuerza laboral que representa mejor la diversidad racial de nuestros estudiantes, familias y de la comunidad.
