Daily Home Screening for Students
Parents/Guardians: Please do your part by completing this short screening each morning
before your child leaves for school.
This checklist does not need to be turned into your child’s school. Please use it as a guide to assess your childs’ health.
If your child answers Yes to any symptoms question, your child should remain home. He/she will be excused from school. The student can return to school after 10 days since symptoms started and 24 hours with no fever (without the use of fever-reducing medicine) and symptoms improving.
Symptoms:
If your child has any of the following symptoms, that indicates a possible illness that may decrease the student’s ability to learn and also put them at risk for spreading illness to others. Please check your child for these symptoms:
* Temperature 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
* Sore throat
* New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing (for students with chronic allergic/asthmatic cough, a change in their cough from baseline)
* Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain
* New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever
Masks/Face Shield Reminder
Masks/face shields:
All individuals will be required to wear masks/face shields within the school buildings and at bus stops and on the bus. Guests into the buildings, including parents, are to wear a mask/face shield upon entry.
Students must have a mask:
All students need to bring their own mask and preferably have an extra one with them in case the one they are wearing breaks. We have a very limited supply of masks on hand to give to students.
Attention all 6thgraders
The State of Iowa requires all incoming 7th graders to have two important vaccines: Tdap and Meningococcal. Proof of these vaccines or a medical/religious exemption must be on file by the first day of school or you will not be able to attend school. You may start getting these vaccines now before the school rush next August. Shot records may be faxed to North Middle School at 277-5941.

Music in Our Schools Month
March has been officially designated by NAfME, The National Association for Music Education for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM®), the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. MIOSM began as a single statewide celebration in 1973, and has grown over the decades to encompass a day, then a week, and then in 1985 to become a month long celebration of school music. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children.
FUN MUSIC FACT:
Playing a musical instrument in a group engages more regions of the brain simultaneously than any other activity!
8th Grade Solo/Ensemble Festival March 4th
The Solo & Ensemble Festival for all 8th grade band students will be held on Thurs. March 4 from 3:15-4:00 pm in the band, choir, and orchestra rooms. A performance schedule will be sent home soon. Students have been preparing a piece to perform in a small group. Students will perform for a judge, another band director, for feedback. One of the most important aspects of the performance is to allow our students an opportunity to play either in a small group or by themselves, as well as to get feedback from another director.
Two parents or family members may attend to listen to the performances. Masks are required for everyone in North Middle School.
JazZ, Jazz, and More Jazz Night March 16th
The jazz bands will have a performance at NMS on Tuesday March 16th. This concert will feature our two middle school jazz bands, as well as the NHS Jazz 1. A free willing offering will be accepted at the door. We appreciate your generosity in advance, especially since we have not been able to do our regular fundraising that has involved food in years past. The performance begins at 7:00 pm and should last 30-45 minutes.
March's Learner Attribute Focus Includes:
North Middle School continues to acknowledge students school-wide for exhibiting positive learner attributes. Each month an assembly is held to celebrate students selected by their grade-level teachers to acknowledge these successes. The Patriot Trait focus for the month of March includes the following learner attributes: Principled:
This describes a North Middle student who acts with integrity and honesty, along with a strong sense of fairness and justice. This student demonstrates respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere, along with taking responsibility for their actions and their consequences.
Risk-Takers:
Students who identify as risk-takers approach uncertainty with forethought and determination. They work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. This student tends to be resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.
Box Tops for Education
Dear Families,
During this challenging time, our teachers and students need more help than ever.
No matter what school looks like, Box Tops for Education is a fast and easy way for
you to help out from home.
The Box Tops program has been around for over 20 years, and it really works. In fact,
Box Tops for Education has helped give almost a billion dollars to schools since 1996.
In 2019, the program evolved to become digital so that you can earn for your school
with just the touch of a button.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Buy participating products and use the Box Tops mobile
app to scan your store receipt. The app identifies eligible products and automatically
adds Box Tops to your school's earnings online. Even if you’re shopping online or
doing grocery pickup, you can still submit your e-receipts and earn Box Tops. Twice a
year, our school gets a check!
Your earnings may seem small, but they really do add up. The more people that participate,
the bigger the impact we can make. So let's give our teachers the support
they need and help give more kids the opportunity to dream. Little by little, we can help make a big difference.

Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
