Mental Health
I am LaTonya Jackson, your School-Based Mental Health Counselor. I currently serve Southeast Middle School and Horrell Hill Elementary and work in the Young Adult Mental Health Clinic when I am not on-site at the school. I have been a counselor for fourteen years and have served in Richland One through the contract with the Department of Mental Health for six years, covering various elementary, Middle, and High Schools. As your School Mental Health Counselor, I am a resource for the faculty, staff, and students. I am here to work with you to assist the students in meeting their full potential and being the best student, they can be emotionally, physically, and mentally.
Who should be referred?
A student that may be unable to focus, unable to sit still, loses things quickly, distracted during lesson time, unable to stay on task and complete tasks, socially awkward, unable to communicate needs with adults, experience the loss of a loved one or separation from family/caregiver, a family conflict that causes problems in the classroom, anxiety around school or schoolwork, experience bullying, shows signs of depression.
Why refer to Mental Health and not the School Counselor? Mental Health can provide a biopsychosocial assessment, individual and family therapy, psychiatrist and nurses services, medication management and monitoring. We work very closely with the School Counselor to coordinate treatment services. Contact information Latonya.jackson@richlandone.org Southeast Middle School: Room 600

SMS Courtyard Revitalization Project
Ms. Smith, Mr. Sewell's 8th Grade Science and Engineering Classes
Our school courtyard has gone unkept for several years and is in a state of disarray. Conversations have taken place about fixing it up, but nothing has taken place yet. Since we have studied plants this year, let’s see what we can do to improve our courtyard by:
1. redesigning the layout, if necessary.
2. identifying the right plants (gymnosperms and angiosperms) that need to be planted so that pollinators will be attracted, regrowth is continuous, and not much maintenance is required (sustainability).
3. identifying an area that can possibly be used as outdoor learning/lounging space and deciding the type of furniture that could be placed in the area.
Finally, students will use their data/research to create a SMS Courtyard Revitalization Project presentation. The top presentation from each class (1 from each class from Coach Sewell and Ms. Smith, which will also be based on feedback from Mrs. Lampkin) will be shared with Mr. Myers for consideration to implement.
