AMHS Uniform Policy- Parents we need your help!

In recent weeks, we have observed that some of our scholars are having difficulty following the AMHS Uniform Policy. Arabia Mountain High School is and has always been a uniform school. Therefore, all students (9th -12th grade) are expected to be in school uniform daily. We know that many of you have reviewed the dress code policy with your students. However, some of the scholars are choosing to not adhere to uniform expectations. Therefore, beginning this week through the remainder of the semester, we will strictly enforce the dress code policy as we are a uniform school. Students who are out of the dress code will receive discipline consequences and will be required to contact their parents to bring them the appropriate AMHS uniform. Mondays have been designated as “Blazer Mondays.” Students should wear their navy blazers each Monday as a part of their uniforms. Please note the uniform closet will not be available during this pandemic period. Parents, please review the uniform policy with your student and help them to adhere to the AMHS uniform policy.

Parent/Guardian Volunteer Opportunties

Greetings AMHS Parents/Guardians:


Each year Arabia Mountain High School parents/guardians must complete 10 hours of volunteer service hours to maintain enrollment at AMHS. Parents can volunteer in the following ways to earn their volunteer hours:


1. Attend parent meetings (Attendance logs are maintained)

2. Join the Arabia Mountain High School Chapter of PTSA

3. Serve on one of the PTSA Committees

4. Serve as a chaperone on field trips (Sponsors will submit hours)

5. Donate pre-packaged snacks for after-school tutorial sessions. (Receipts are required upon donating items)

6. Volunteer with your student's sports teams. (Coaches will submit hours)

7. Donate air-purifying plants to the school (This opportunity will come this Spring)

8. Monetary donations of $10.50 per volunteer hour is accepted (i.e., 5 hours = $52.50). Donations can be accepted in the form of cash, money order, or cashier's check. (Donations are used to support school programs)

9. Serve as a guest speaker for your student’s classes.


Please plan to complete your required 10 hours of volunteer service by May 20, 2022. We look forward to working with you.

Black History Month at AMHS

Free On-site COVID-19 Testing Available

Each Thursday between 10:00 is -11:30 am, staff and students will have the opportunity to participate in free, on-site COVID-19 testing. As a reminder, testing is not mandatory at this time, but the district is offering this opportunity to help keep our school community safe. Testing at AMHS will take place in room A205. DCSD Student Device Access Survey

Greetings AMHS Parents,


The Federal Communication Commission Emergency Connectivity Fund has allocated funding to help schools cover the cost for devices and internet connectivity for students who lack sufficient access for remote learning.


Please complete the following survey to help the DeKalb County School District further determine needs for the 2021-22 and 2022 – 23 school years. The district will use this information to purchase devices and connectivity that will continue to support our students.

If you have more than one child who attends school in the DeKalb County School District, please complete a separate survey for each child.

GA Milestones EOC Mid Month

Parents,

If your child completed a B section in December (FLEX, GA. Virtual, etc.) in American Lit, Biology, Coordinate Algebra, or US History, they must take the EOC for that class. Below is the letter with the calendar and the schedule. AMHS will conduct the Spring Mid-Month the week of January 18th. EOC Study Guides can be found on the AMHS Testing Information Page. Summer 2022 Learning Opprtunities

Summer High School Internship at Atlanta Botanical Gardens

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is gearing up to host its fourth cohort of high school interns for summer 2022. Applications and adult recommendations are online and due March 27, 2022.


The Garden’s Summer High School Internship is a seven-week program on Wednesdays-Fridays from 9 am-4 pm from June 1- July 15. We are looking for students who will be 16 years or older by June 1, 2022, who currently attend a metro-Atlanta Title I school. The interns will be paid an hourly wage of $10/hr and also receive lunch, program supplies, shirts, and transportation assistance. Participants get to work alongside our Garden staff from various departments including outdoor horticulture, indoor horticulture, amphibian care team, and conservation team in the mornings; learning about our collections and actively caring for them in the process. Afternoons are devoted to college and career skills sessions that include financial planning, resume building, cooking classes, and public speaking to name a few. In addition, students learn about plant career opportunities outside of the Garden and how to connect with plant-based community service projects throughout the city. At the end of the internship, our interns will produce a personal project to share their acquired knowledge with their cohort, Garden staff, and possibly guests as well.

The district has released the 2021-2022 graduation schedule. The AMHS Class of 2022 Graduation Ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 11:30 am at Hallford Stadium. Scholarship Opportunity- James L. Thornton Memorial Scholarship

The 2021-2022 James L. Thornton Memorial scholarship application is now available. The James L. Thornton Memorial Scholarship is in its 20th year and we are again making 3 scholarships available this year. The application and essay are due (postmarked) by March 19, 2022.

Over the past 19 years, we have been blessed in awarding 49 scholarships to South DeKalb graduates.

Region 2 DeKalb Council Parent Teacher Association Scholarship Opportunity

The Region 2 DeKalb Council Parent Teacher Association is offering one scholarship to a card-carrying high school senior to support their college expenses. The deadline for the completed application is Friday, March 11th. Please see the application packet below for more information.

The Whiteside Foundation is dedicated to the future of children and making sure that they have the resources that are needed to be successful. This scholarship is offered to graduating high schools seniors who live in a single-parent household. The recipients will be awarded $1000 towards school expenses.


Requirements

  • Graduating High School Senior

  • GPA: 2.75 or higher

  • Formally accepted by college or university that is deemed as a Historically Black College and University

  • Part of a single-parent household

  • Majors choice: STEM majors, Education, Criminal Justice or International Studies

School Uniforms

Thank you for assisting us in maintaining the AMHS School Uniform Policy. The vast majority of our students are following the uniform policy. Please continue to remind your student to be in the appropriate school uniform daily. As a reminder, all students are expected to wear their navy Blazer each Monday for "Blazer Mondays." This is a required part of the AMHS uniform. Please review the uniform policy below with your student. Thank you in advance for assisting us with our uniform policy. Need a Chromebook

New student Chromebooks were delivered and issued last week. If your student needs a Chromebook. Please complete the DCSD Chromebook User Agreement and return it to Mr. Burd (Paris_Burd@dekalbschoolsga.org). Once the user agreement is received, the student will be assigned a Chromebook. The user agreement form is linked below.
