Mariner Memo
Week of October 14 - 18
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
There were many people who made this week possible.
- A huge thank you to Kim Kirk, our leadership teacher, who helped our student leadership classes organize and implement the homecoming events of the week.
- Our leadership class did a phenomenal job of thinking about how to look at inclusivity, one of our core covenants, throughout the week's events.
- Amy Brewster and our PTSA put on a fun tailgate in the bus loop on Friday. There was face painting, car decorations, cake walk, food, and other games.
- Susan Auld, Robbie Burgess, Sonya Morrison, and Amy Hankinson are our class advisors. They spent countless hours supervising students while they created their class floats.
- Selena Arciniega-Storey and Beth Keeley, along with our cheer and dance teams, put on an incredible dance in the Commons. It was well organized and beautifully decorated.
- Our admin team of Colin Cushman, Bethany Barrett, Mike Couto, Kim Kirk, and Peggy Fogarty spent several late nights supervising events and ensuring that all students had a great evening.
- Craig Snyder and the Sehome Marching Band put on an incredible show at half-time of the football game.
It was truly an entire school effort to put on such a fun week! This week we have Super Wednesday events. See below for additional information.
Have a great week! Remember to reach out if you have questions or feedback!

GOOD FOOD PROMISE STUDENT AMBASSADORS
The Student Ambassadors would be a link between food services and their peers, helping us learn about how students are responding to the new menu and what changes they would like to see. We will have one meeting per month at the Shuksan dinner program, where they will be the first to get to try a potential future menu item and offer feedback. We also will give them simple but important assignments to gather input from peers each month (e.g., take photos of 20 students’ lunch trays, ask 20 kids for their feedback on the salad bar or a new menu item). We are looking for students who are:
- outgoing and enjoy talking to a lot of different people
- interested in food and health
- eat school meals frequently
- willing to make an effort to attend a dinner meeting once per month on the third Wednesday of each month at Shuksan Middle School from 5-6:30PM.
These students will get to have an important say in the development of future school menu items and food service. For their community service, we will offer Student Ambassadors free dinner once a month and plenty of swag (t-shirts, buttons, etc.), as well as an item for their resumes and college applications (we will write letters of recommendation upon request).
Students interested in this position should complete the application and email it to Chef Patrick by October 23.

POVERTY SIMULATION
Poverty is a reality for many students and families in our school district. But unless you've experienced poverty, it's difficult to truly understand.
Are you interested in gaining a better understanding of what it might feel like to live in poverty? Please join us for a “Poverty Simulation” on Thursday, November 7th, 6-8 pm at Sehome High School.
It’s an incredibly impactful event that gives us a better understanding of the challenges people face when working and struggling to pay bills. Each attendee is assigned the role of a family member and they must navigate various challenges throughout the workshop. This eye-opening event raises awareness about poverty-related issues in a way that inspires compassion and community action!
The Bellingham Schools Foundation is happily covering all costs to partner with Whatcom Dream to make this a FREE event for all. Click here to reserve your spot

Volunteer Meet & Greet
The Sehome PTSA is considering different options for the spring fundraising event. We have had a long history of hosting successful auctions, but this year we are lacking an auction committee. PTSA would like to brainstorm with past and future volunteers to get some ideas on how to proceed. Are you interested in continuing the auction tradition? Do you have another idea for an event that will help us raise the funds to support our school? Would you like to meet up with other SHS families? We would love for you to join us Tuesday, October 22nd, at 7:00 pm at the Whole Foods food court. No pressure, we promise!
If you have any questions, please contact us at sehomehighschoolptsa@gmail.com.
Hope to see you there!
