THE SCHOOL BELL
Williston Schools /October 10, 2018
by Principal Jacqueline Parks
We are part way through October and parent-teacher-student conferences are coming up quickly. This is a great time to check-in with your student about how their first 8+ weeks have gone and share that with teachers at the conference. This is particularly important if it is your child’s first year on a team, as they are still getting to know each other.
We hope that every parent will sign up for a conference! The relationships and communication between teachers and parents is critical to the success of students. Conferences are one of the times that this relationship can be established and grown. We are fortunate to have a multi-year program where students and teachers remain together for two and up to four years. One of the benefits is that it allows for a trusting relationship to develop. It also helps your child to know that the adults are all working together to support their education.
Middle school students will be sharing their personalized learning plan goals with parents at the fall conferences. These are goals that the student has established after going through a series of learning activities designed to identify their strengths and weaknesses. One of the hopes in sharing these goals is that multiple adults will engage in conversations about working toward them.
Finally, keep in mind that all teachers are available for conferences with parents including special educators, interventionists, essential arts, guidance counselors and world language. You can request a separate conference with any of these educators or ask if they can join the conference time with the classroom teacher.
Again, we hope that every parent or guardian will set-up a conference for their student. We look forward to seeing you and working together with you to help your student have a successful school experience.

Developmental Screening for Children ages 3-5 years
Do you have concerns about your child’s development? Allen Brook School is offering a developmental screening for children ages 3-5 years. A screening can be used to determine if children are learning basic skills and meeting developmental milestones. Early childhood professionals will engage in activities which will allow them to observe the way your child plays, learns, speaks, and moves their body. Each child is unique and develops at his or her own pace, but sometimes concerns can arise, and it is helpful to identify these concerns as early as possible to in order to get necessary supports in place.
Friday, November 2nd from 9:00 - 11:00. Pre-registration is required.
Please call Victoria Francis, Early Childhood Outreach Educator,
at 871-6240 to schedule an appointment.
(* If you have concerns about a younger child and would like to request a screening, please call us.)

VISION AND HEARING SCREENING FOR STUDENTS
Health Offices at WCS and ABS are starting to test students' vision and hearing. Vermont schools are required by the state to test students' vision and hearing in Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade. Students in 7th grade will only have a vision test.
This year we are very lucky again to be selected for the Vermont Lions KidSight program. Middlebury Lions Club will be coming to our schools on October 12th (WCS) and 22nd (ABS) to perform vision photoscreening.
Vermont Lions KidSight program uses a photoscreening digital device called a SPOT to objectively check for vision problems. The photoscreener is like a large camera. It takes a picture of your child’s eyes. With that and the measurements obtained from the images, SPOT can detect a number of potential eye conditions.
If we find a problem, we will send you a referral letter. If your child’s SPOT results form states “Complete Eye Exam Recommended” at the top right of the page, it is a referral and we recommend that your child visit an eye care professional.
On the SPOT referral, you will see a section on the right side of the page called “Potential Condition”. This includes information about the potential eye condition(s) detected by the SPOT device.
If you do not hear from us, your child passed the screenings. If your child is not in the selected grades, but you have concerns, and feel your child needs to have a vision or hearing test this year, please contact the Health Office at your child’s school and we will add them to the list.
The vision screening will only happen on the dates listed above. It is a one-day event and we strongly encourage your child not to be absent from school on that day. There will be no make-ups. Thank you so much!
