Weekly Coaching Focus Areas: 1/19-1/22

Observing with Data in Hand

One of the priorities that I want us to fulfill as coaches this semester is to observe with data in hand/hard copy in each observation. This will help to sharpen your eye as a coach to become more data driven as well as support you in developing your teachers' development of executing and planning in a data-driven way.

What does data in hand mean?
Entering a classroom with some form of data wall (STEP wall, Cumulative assessment data wall, NWEA quartile wall, etc.)

Make a tally mark of the students who are being called on to answer in class and the quartile buckets being called on the most.

Always observe with the teacher-facing lesson plans in your hand as well so that you have an accurate picture of what to focus on with teachers.

Observation Form

In order to speed up the feedback process for teachers, I have created a hard copy an observation form for us to leave with teachers in the classroom once we finish the observation so that they have immediate, hard copy feedback.

This week's form aligns with the video protocol they will complete on Wednesday.

In the Moment Coaching

This is a priority that I want us to have in also creating a tighter feedback loop with teachers so that they grow better faster.

For this week, you can focus your in-the-moment coaching on "Do It Again" opportunities for teachers.

However, remember that in the moment coaching is just as effective and should be used to coach teachers academically/content-wise in the moment.

Capturing Video

Prioritize capturing videos on Tuesday and Wednesday/Thursday for their video reflections on Wednesday and Friday.

Every teacher must have a video by CoB Tuesday to prepare for their video analysis on Wednesday and Friday.

Capture video - quick snippets or longer lessons - of teachers when you're observing. Use this as game film for yourself to watch so that you build your skill in coaching teachers while also identifying their greatest gap area.

Friday: Types of Talk Video Analysis - due by CoB on Friday.

Share me on/with me their video reflection docs.

Lesson Plan Review

On Wednesdays, 4:15-5pm, we'll use that time to review lesson plans together (in the same room) so that we can ensure that all teachers are receiving targeted feedback while also preserving maximizing your time as coaches.

Please plan to meet in my office at 4:15 on Wednesday. I sent an invite on Saturday.

LP Review Protocol

I have created a more predictable 1:1/03 template for your 1:1 time with me. Here is the default template.

I will send your customized template out to you before/at the beginning of your 1:1 with me.

This is the form that I will use for all school leaders and will customize it for your 1;1 based on your role: AP, BOM, OM.

APs + April: Master Coaching Deck

I have created a simplified Master Coaching Deck to update the action steps for each teacher/staff member each week.

Having this updated will allow you to identify trends across your cohort of teachers as well as allow me to identify trends/PD needs for the entire school.

The Master Coaching Deck is the only pre-work for your 1:1 with me this week. Just update it beginning with teacher observations/1:1s this week. Don't worry about backlogging.

You need to make a copy of the deck, rename/duplicate tabs for each of your teachers and share the deck with me.

Do It Again* - let's be sure to continue to highlight this so that teachers can feel the importance and relevancy of having students "do it again" not just in the first week back from break, but that it is something that effective teachers all of the time. I used Do It Again pretty much every single day in my classroom.

School Leadership Team Meeting: Friday, January 22nd

During our School Leadership Team Meeting on Friday, January 22nd (8-9am), Kelly Harris Perrin, Executive Coach, will join us.

During the meeting, she will share several effective ways to organize our time and weeks as as school leaders.

She will be available to meet with school leaders after the meeting from 9:30-11am. If you are interested in meeting with Kelly one-on-one, let me know so that I schedule time with her.

School Leadership Team: Weekly Planning Meeting

On Fridays, we have a hold for our School Leadership Team Weekly Planning Meeting (11-12pm).

This Friday, I will be meeting with Kelly during this time, but please plan to meet as a team to go through this weekly planning protocol. *I've sent it to Kelly for feedback, so it may be revised by Friday.
