Weekly NEWSLETTER December 12, 2016
Hello, FSA Family!
It would be impossible to highlight all of the amazing activities that have happened in the last week in my Principal's Corner, so please be sure to "read all about it" below!
The faculty and I are just so proud of what a well-rounded group of students we have here at FSA! To be able to complete MAP testing in the morning, stay focused after testing in their regular classes, then transition into after-school events and clubs, and then head home to tackle homework is just amazing!
We have seen so many situations during this past week when students have been managing full schedules, yet maintaining composure and often sharing smiles. What dedication. What perseverance. What amazing students! Go Mustangs!
Parents had a busy week, too, with many attending our Parent Seminar on Tuesday night, then returning to our school to support our clubs, watch our shows, cheer on our teams and our competitions! Go Mustang Parents!
Annual Fund Campaign
I'd like to thank those families who have made a gift to support our Annual Fund Campaign. As of this afternoon, nearly $62,000 has been raised towards our goal of $150,000, with 22% parent participation. If we can get 75% family participation, we will celebrate with a school-wide reward. If we reach 100% family participation before 12/31/16, I have agreed to get slimed! :)
As always, my door is an open door, and I welcome and encourage your thoughts and feedback. To contact me, please feel free to email me at ksener@fultonscienceacademy.org.
Sincerely,
Kenan Sener
Principal

Academic Team & Competition News
FSA'S ALL-FEMALE ROBOTICS TEAM WINS FIRST PLACE CHAMPIONs and Best Overall ROBOT PERFORMANCE Awards
What an incredible performance! Congratulations to FSA's all-female robotics team, "Control+Alt+Delete," for winning the First Place "Champion's Award" and the "Best Overall Robot Performance Award" in the Regional First Lego League Robotics Regional Tournament yesterday. It was a clean sweep for our FSA girls! #girlpower
The students planned meticulously and did every ounce of work themselves. Whether it was naming the team, coding and running the robot's complicated missions, adhering to time frames, creating engineering logs, presenting their concept to a panel of judges, or developing their team's core values, "Control+Alt+Delete" invested countless hours into their project. Obtaining not one, but two main awards was a huge honor.
Team members, who are all eighth graders at Fulton Science Academy, include:
Anjali B., Claire B., Kalissa G., Krishna P., Manasvi G., Shriya G., Sibel O., and Sofiya J.
FIRST LEGO League challenges kids in over 80 countries to think like scientists and engineers. This year's theme, "ANIMAL ALLIES," tasked teams with choosing and solving a real-world animal problem, including a presentation.
Control+Alt+Delete decided to tackle this project by researching a more natural way to eliminate mosquitos than pesticides. They decided to focus upon bats. Bats can eat up to five thousand mosquitoes in one night, and they are somewhat easy to attract.
To address this issue, the team constructed a bat house with a vent that opens or closes based on the temperature - if it is over 65ºF, the vent opens, allowing air circulation, and if it is below 65ºF, the vent closes, allowing the bats to stay warm. Along with this, members of Control+Alt+Delete created a mosquito trap for smaller spaces that is effective as well, using carbon dioxide and LED lights to attract them towards a fan that sucks them into the enclosure. The project was detailed and the team presented with display boards, a prototype and, of course, the robot itself. Control+Alt+Delete is one of more than 32,000 teams globally.
Said team coach, Mr. Kaya, "I'm very happy for the students. They are already focused on making project enhancements as they approach super-regionals in January with an ultimate goal of advancing to globals. With hard work and perseverance, anything is possible, and these young ladies are in it to win it."
Middle Science Olympians place third at Chattahoochee
On Saturday, three Science Olympiad teams traveled to Johns Creek to compete in the Chattahoochee Invitational. Thirty-six teams from Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee, including four teams from last year’s national tournament, competed.
The FSA teams placed third, seventh, and thirteenth. Head coaches Pam Walsh and Gloria Stathos were impressed by their teams’ performances. “To have three teams place among the top 15 teams demonstrates the depth we have,” said Mrs. Stathos.
“We definitely have some very strong events,” said Mrs. Walsh, “as well as events in which we have room for improvement.” The team will have plenty of competition experience in January as they compete in tournaments in Tennessee, Ohio, and Marietta. “We’re competing in more tournaments than ever before”, explained Mrs. Walsh.
FSA students placed in the top five in fifteen of the twenty-three events, including:

Elementary Robotics Team wins Robot Design Award
Our elementary grade team, the Molten Mustangs, coached by Ms. Ertekin and comprised of FSAPS students, Annemarie, Neerav, Suha, Satvik, Tanish, and Varsha was awarded the Robot Design Award at the FLL Qualifier held at Shoal Creek Elementary in Conyers.
Their project was well received and the team's enthusiasm was visible all day. The robot judges were very impressed by the simple and effective design Molten Mustangs robot.
Thanks to everyone who helped especially Vipul (aka Neerav’s Dad)!
Last week at FSA....
Bringing the curtain down....Black Boots Lost Loot
The theatre department at FSA is growing, and we are pleased to announce that the Mustang Players’ second annual winter play was a huge success! The Drama Club has been hard at work since August preparing for Black Boot’s Lost Loot, a fast-paced comedy chronicling the rivalry of two pirate crews.. With a cast double the size of last year’s The Giver, this production was no simple task. Dedicated actors showed up on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons; they even lent a hand with set construction and costume design.
On Thursday and Friday of last week, teachers, students, parents, and community members filled the cafeteria to behold the fruits of our labor. The energy was palpable as our players delivered a memorable performance and hardly missed a cue! There was even a cameo appearance from one our beloved faculty members, Mr. Christopher Stiffler (aka Man-on-Fire).
Through this work, our students receive a hands-on theatre education. In addition to that, they make memories—both on stage and off—that will last a long time to come. There are many valuable reasons to take part in Drama Club: it builds confidence and fosters a spirit of teamwork and comradery. But, perhaps more profoundly, students experience the fleeting nature of the play. They work hard to perform something that will exist in the same way only once, before the set is broken down and the costumes put away.
We are eternally grateful to be able to share this work with the FSA community and to the gracious administration who believe that theatre is part of a holistic education. Thank you to everyone who supported us along the way!
JV Basketball plays first game
From Principal Sener
Our first game is over. It was great to watch and cheer for the team. The team exhibited a huge effort and persevered until the final whistle. They certainly have a BIG HEART!
The team we played and the teams we will be playing mainly have 10th graders. Considering that we did not practice together with all team members and we have many students from 8th grade in our team, the other teams will have a natural advantage against us this year.
However, regardless of the score, each game is still very important for us in our journey to build a great school team. Therefore, let's continue to do our best in each game. We will learn and get better each day. Our experience and practices this year, will make us a much stronger team next year.
Our next game will be this Wednesday at 6pm against Cottage School at the FSA gym. Everyone is welcome to come and offer support! (Concessions will be available).
Go Basketball Mustangs!
Parent Seminar Series ADDRESSEd THE Nuances of Attention Deficit Disorder
A HUGE THANK YOU TO Dr. Muneer Ali, from Amen Clinics for an informative presentation.
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a national health crisis that continues to grow—yet it remains one of the most misunderstood and incorrectly treated illnesses today. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), 20% of boys and 11% of girls are being diagnosed with it.
Dr. Ali's topics of discussion included optimizing the brain and increasing performance at a higher level. Dr. Ali covered:
- Your brain systems and how to boost the chances for success
- The essentials to a young adults brain healthy life and the 4 circle approach to health and brain performance
- Importance of nutrition and regular brain-healthy habits to balance and optimize the student’s brain
- Simple ways to assure your child’s concentration and memory skills
- How to avoid conditions that can interfere with academic studies, the ability to focus on the task at hand and result in poor grades, and trouble with authority.

Recent Field Trips
Ga Tech Field Trip 8th grade
Our students' smiles say it all; what a great way to embrace learning outside of the classroom!
GA Aquarium Field Trip pre-k-3
Students in grades Pre-K through three visited the Georgia Aquarium last week. As they began their exploration of the aquarium exhibits, third-grade students in Ms. Cox's class were immediately enthralled in observation of the jellyfish and observing their environment. They were amazed by their tentacles and their transparent-like colors.
Students greatly enjoyed the dolphin show and going behind the scenes to watch the whale sharks being fed. Tomi A. said, "Their mouths were gigantic! I was surprised they were not so energetic like most fish seem to be. I learned they were a species of the shark family. I loved the aquarium!"
Students learned about the food chain and which consumers fed on other producers. These were wonderful connections made to our current third grade unit of study with Animal classification and adaptations. Students' all agreed the Ocean Voyager exhibit was their favorite exhibit while getting to ride on the moving sidewalk and getting to see the whale sharks pass overhead.
All in all, it was a fantastic experience for our curious and eager learners!

Clubs
Elementary Geography
Geography club students enjoyed creating African masks after learning about the geographical locations of African countries. We learned how the tribal masks were used for ceremonial purposes and were usually decorated very abstractly. Students were able to make their own and participate in a tribal dance.
Geography club participants have enjoyed quizzing themselves on the geography of differing continents and often challenge each other in Kahoot Geography trivia. Aiden M. said, "My favorite thing about Geography Club is learning about latitude and longitude and quizzing myself of U.S.A. geography!"

SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM
APPLY NOW FOR YOUR 2017 TAX CREDIT
Dear FSA Families,
We are pleased to announce details surrounding the GA Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Applications to participate are being accepted now, and we hope you will choose to participate.
This program provides an opportunity for taxpayers to redirect Georgia tax dollars and, in turn, provide financial aid assistance to FSA students. We would greatly appreciate it if you would please apply and choose Fulton Science Academy Private School as your designated school.
Please also inform your friends, co-workers, and relatives who live in Georgia; they can also participate and help support our school.
How can this tax credit benefit both Fulton Science Academy Private School and myself?
Under this law, you can redirect a portion of your Georgia income tax to provide financial aid assistance to FSA students based upon need. You will receive a tax credit on your state income taxes and a charitable deduction on your federal incomes taxes for the amount of your contribution. For married couples filing jointly, the maximum tax credit-eligible contribution is $2,500 ($1,000 as an individual).
How do I participate in the program?
It’s easy. All you have to do is complete our easy paperless process, and Apogee will submit the paperwork on your behalf. Apogee will process your approval notice within 30 days. Once the approval notice is received, please send your payment by check or pay online within 60 days of your approval date.
Is there a limit regarding how much I can give each year?
Yes, the amount you can give is limited by your tax filing status:
- Married Filing Jointly: Maximum of $2,500
- Individual Filer: Maximum of $1,000
- Married Filing Separately: Maximum of $1,250
- Individuals who receive pass-through income can contribute up to $10k
- C-Corporation: Up to 75% of GA tax liability
Can I direct my contribution to help a specific student?
Although we understand why it would be ideal to designate specific recipients, this is not possible. Apogee does not accept donations that are allocated for specific individuals. Donors would lose their ability to receive a charitable contribution, as well as the Georgia tax credit.
Apogee is a 501c3 non-profit organization and, as such, is bound first and foremost by the rules and regulations governing this special status. As a 501c3, Apogee is not permitted to accept any donations directed to a specific individual. To do so would put Apogee’s non-profit status in jeopardy and, in turn, its SSO status in jeopardy.
Who or what is Apogee?
Apogee Scholarship Fund is a state registered SSO (Student Scholarship Organization) as well as a 501c3 non-profit organization whose primary functions are to facilitate the process of distributing tax credits in exchange for donations and to disburse those funds for private school tuition scholarships.
"Apogee" (ap-uh-jee) is defined as the highest point (typically of an arc). To this end, Apogee strives to help children reach their highest educational potential.
How do I know what my GA tax liability is?
Your GA tax liability is typically 6% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). You can also look at Line 18 of your GA tax return (Form 500) to learn your GA tax liability.
Why should I give now?
The State has placed a yearly cap on the amount of credit available. That amount is $58 million. That means that every school, every taxpayer, and every corporation in GA is drawing from the exact same pool of credits.
Once the funds are distributed, interested agencies must wait until the following year to participate in the program. Once funds are deposited, they are immediately available to assist families who want the best educational choice for their children.
Please note: The yearly cap is generally met on the very first day of January; we expect this trend to continue until the cap is raised beyond the $58 million. For this reason, it is strongly encouraged that you please submit your application as soon as possible to be considered for approval.
Can I reduce my quarterly estimated tax payments by the amount I donate?
This is a great opportunity to write the check to support education instead of paying that portion of estimated taxes. Please ask your accountant to reduce your quarterly estimated tax payment by the amount of your contribution. This will reduce each of your quarterly payments by 25% of the amount you intend to contribute.
What happens if my donation exceeds my tax liability?
The tax credit is a “non-refundable” credit. This means you cannot receive a refund for any more than your GA tax liability. Any excess credit beyond your tax liability can be carried forward for up to five years.
Do I have to include my check with my donation package when mailing to Apogee?
No. Apogee cannot accept payments prior to January 1. Since the vast majority of applications received are early applications, payment should be made after approval has been secured. Payment must be madewithin 60 days of approval.
What is Apogee's Tax ID Number?
FEIN: 26-2693572
Is this donation a charitable deduction on my Federal return in addition to the credit?
Yes. Because of the 501c3 status, you are eligible to receive a Federal Charitable Deduction for the amount of your contribution. The law does require that you increase your State income by the amount of your Charitable Deduction on your Federal return (donation amount).
Can Apogee help me understand how this credit will affect my specific tax situation?
Yes. Apogee is well versed in the specifics of how this credit affects most tax scenarios and is happy to offer guidance regarding how this credit is related to your specific tax situation.
As always, we also suggest that you please consult your personal tax advisor, as they will have the best understanding of your specific tax situation.
How do I get started?
Simply log onto http://www.apogee123.org.
