WMS Music Department
The WMS Music Department's Winter Concert was a huge success. We saw many families at the WHS auditorium supporting our young musicians and hope that even more of you can make it out to our spring concert in May. At this point in the year, our 7/8th grade groups are beginning to prepare for the state festivals and will start tackling some high level repertoire. There are some available spots left in both choirs and in band, so please see a music teacher by January 16 for more information.
For up to date information, please visit the WMS Music Department's website at http://wmsmusicdepart.weebly.com. Any questions, feel free to email the teachers, jhburns@woonsocketschools.com, amazza@woonsocketschools.com or acarnes@woonsocketschools.com.
The January meeting of the WMS Music Boosters, a parent group dedicated to supporting our music students, will convene on Monday, January 26 at 7:00pm in the Villa Nova band room. We encourage all to attend so that we can plan many exciting, upcoming events, including our big end of the year field trip.

The WMS will be holding a Blood Drive on Jan 26th from 12-4 pm. Every person who donates gets a $5 gift card to Dunkin' Donuts. We will have the mobile coach parked between both Middle Schools. Please stop by and make a donation that could save a life! Remember to bring a photo ID. Thank you for your support!
The middle school is continually collecting flip tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Providence. To date, we have collect over 450 pounds. The proceeds from the tabs helps support the program which allows families of ill children to be sheltered nearby so they can be close to their child. It is a fantastic program and we need your support. Save the tabs from soda and juice cans and send them in with your child or collect them in your community and drop them off to either school! Help us help those in need.
Parents of six grade students: Just a reminder, the Department of Health has medical requirements as part of the entrance into the 7th grade. They require an updated physical and updated immunizations. Non-compliance can result in exclusion.

ABC's of Student Success
When kids face obstacles that seem insurmountable, parents must be there to:
- encourage children to have high - but achievable - expectations
- ask children How do you eat an elephant? (one bite at a time) That's how people face obstacles, too. Help your children divide and conquer their obstacles.
- help children recall past experiences. Emphasize their accomplishments. Use those memories to build kids' confidence as they "keep their eyes on the prize"
Math @ Home
The Game of Pig
Roll a single die. How many dots do you see? If you wish, keep rolling and keep a running total of your rolls, but if you roll a 1, you score 0 for that round. The key is to roll as many times as you can without getting a 1. For older kids, play with two dice. If 1 comes up on both die, then your score is 0 for that round.

Parent Pointers
- Children value the things they see their parents value. Let your children see you reading.
- Plan a weekly Family Reading Night or an evening when you go to the public library. Show you value reading by maintaining the routine.
- Give books as gifts.
- Visit web sites of your child's favorite characters, books, and authors.
