Segragation
In response to being admitted to the school, Lucy was the target of anti-black chants and even the throwing of eggs. Not long after she was accepted into the school, she was suspended "for her safety" and later expelled.

Later Life
Because of her infamy in the South after being expelled from the university, she had trouble finding a job for a long while after the series of events. Thirty years later, however, she was accepted back into the school.
