Habitat, Diet and Size

Snow Leopards are carnivores so they eat meat such as wild hares, birds, sheep, blue sheep, and mountain goats. They live in high rugged mountains in Central Asia. Their habitat range cover 2 million km ( approximately the size of Greenland or Mexico). Snow leopards can get to 20 to 50 feet. Tail = 91cm. Weight = 27 to 54kg. Body length = ranges from 75 to 130cm. Size = 1.2 to 1.5m. Ears = 7.62 cm. Snow leopards are generally solitary but mothers have 2 or 3 kittens at a time and rear them to adulthood.

Newborn snow leopards.

A newborn snow leopard doesn't open their eyes until they are 7 days old. They weigh up to 0.5kg. When they are born they are blind.

Interesting Facts.

1.China holds 60% of the snow leopard population.

2.The scientific name for the snow leopard is uncia uncia.

3.The female snow leopard is about 30% smaller than the male.

4.Snow leopards eat slowly and a kill may last for 2-3 days.

5.Snow leopards use scent markings to track and find mates.

6. An average snow leopard lives between 15 to 18 years of age but somet snow leopards bred in captivity are said to have live up to 21.

7. Snow leopards have unique pale green or grey eyes that are very unusual for most cats.

8. Snow leopards are on the brink if extinction. Today, only 6000 snow leopards are surviving in the wild.

9. A major reason for the endangerment of the snow leopards is that they're excessively hunted for their organs, fur and claws that are valuable in Chinese medicine.
