Principal Update - January 2017
From the Principal's Desk
I hope this newsletter finds you and your families well and settling into a New Year! The students have made a smooth transition back to school after the winter break and are hard at work learning. As I visit classrooms, I notice second graders tackling word problems in math and demonstrating understanding of operations through bar models. First grade and Kindergarten students continue to develop as writers as they construct "All About" and "How To" books. Related Arts teachers complement the instructional day for our students to ensure a balanced academic program that includes the arts, technology and physical education.
Our teachers continue to grow professionally in the area of literacy because of our partnership with Teachers College Columbia University. Staff developers from Teachers College meet with our teachers throughout the year to model and discuss best practices. Have you heard about NGSS? Teachers at OHES are already delving into Next Generation Science Standards with experts in the field and are piloting units of study in preparation for the 2017 school year. Stay tuned for more information on parent nights to learn more about these curriculum updates.
