Happy APRIL!

We hope you've had a wonderful Spring Break and are ready for the rest of the school year! The Learning Commons Team is excited about all of the events coming up and we hope you are too!

In March, we prepared students for our author visit (Matthew Cordell! April 5!); we continued encouraging students to participate in Roary's Reading Resolution; we had a wonderful time celebrating Dr. Seuss during Read Across America Week and during Makerspace Moments; and Mrs. Matthews and Mrs. Byrd Fort loved experimenting with Oobleck with 3rd graders! It was a GREAT month!

April is National School Library Month, National Letter Writing Month, AND National Poetry Month. We will be celebrating these events ALL MONTH LONG! Also, we will welcome author and illustrator, Matthew Cordell to our school on Tuesday, April 5!

More details about all of these fantastic events and programs are in this month's newsletter! Enjoy reading all about it and let us know if you have any questions!

Here are some great resources to get you excited about celebrating poetry month with your students!

THANK YOU to all of the teachers who have signed up for a Letter Writing Month Lesson! We will read Owney: The Mail Pouch Pooch and then talk about friendly letters. We will be writing to friends at Doby's Mill Elementary School in Camden. These lessons will kick off the first week in April. If you are interested and haven't signed up yet, let me know! Who doesn't love mail?!

To celebrate our school library (and libraries, in general!), we will have a poster up for students and teachers to write about what they can DO, BE, or LEARN in their library! We will also be celebrating with other schools in our district at Meet @ Main at the Lexington County Public Library on Thursday, April 21. Porkchop Productions will be there along with a lot of your Lexington School District One friends! Come join us!

Parents! Teachers! Students! Make a READING Resolution!

The New Providence Elementary School Learning Commons Team would like to encourage you and your family to make a READING RESOLUTION this year! Did you know that reading aloud together, as a family, is beneficial for ALL members of your family? Many of our younger students hear a bedtime story each night before bed, but the older our students get, the less they hear these bedtime stories. No matter how old your child is, make a resolution to read aloud together before bed EVERY night!

To help you with your resolution, we are excited to announce the 2016 Roary’s Reading Resolution Challenge! We would like to challenge you and your family to read aloud together for 101 Nights. Our challenge will run January 11 - May 13.

We know that making and keeping a resolution is not easy. So, to help keep you motivated, there will be monthly drawings for a small family prize! Each month, we will ask that you send pictures to us of your family reading aloud together. We will share these pictures via social media using the hashtag #RoaryReads2016. Pictures will also be shared on a display in the Learning Commons. You can email pictures to npes@lexington1.net (use RoaryReads2016 as the subject).

  • April 26 - Prize drawing from pictures we receive of NPES families reading outside!

  • May 17 - Prize drawing from all of the Summer Reading Resolution Pledges we receive!

You can read aloud in the car, at bedtime, waiting at the doctor’s office or anytime that YOU create! It does not have to be 101 consecutive days/nights, but what an AWESOME goal! There will not be a log or anything to fill out! Just a pledge to say you are up for the challenge! Please let us know if you have any questions!

Makerspace Moments

Our Makerspace is an area where students and teachers can go to create, explore, and learn. Each month, our Makerspace has a Spotlight Activity where students can explore during Makerspace Moments. In April, we will be thinking about and exploring computer programming with Spheros! Spheros are balls that students program to do things! We will be learning them together! Thank you to Lexington Technology Center for loaning the Spheros to us for the month of April!

Makerspace Moments are Tuesdays and Thursdays - 7:30am - 8am. Each classroom teacher has 3 passes. Please let us know if you have any questions!

Lion Cub Storytime

Each month, we host a story time for little friends who are not yet old enough to attend NPES. We have one more for this school year:
