Personal Devices at School
When this was introduced the intent was to encourage students (grade 7s and 8s) to use personal devices for academic purposes and to support learning. Overall, the students have done a wonderful job using their devices appropriately. Of course, there were a few expected hiccups along the way. Moving forward, after feedback from students, staff and parents, we will be putting the following limitations on personal devices effective Monday, December 19, 2016.
Limitations
- Devices should only appear when the teacher allows them IN CLASS
- Student must ask for permission to use the device when not initiated by the teacher.
- Device zone - in front of or in the office if no teacher is available to monitor (this is the only hallway they should be used outside of class time e.g. breaks/recess)
- If students are seen to be using their device for an extended period of time they will be asked to put it away
- No games or gaming devices
No social media
Devices are never in bathrooms/change rooms
Not on the playground
If there are situations where students are using he devices inappropriately it will be dealt with on a case by case bases. Generally, if a device is out at a time when it should not be, staff will just remind/ask the student to put it away.
The goal is to support our kids in using their personal devices appropriately at school and to use them primarily as a device to support learning.
