Men of Distinction

Vol. 3, Ed. 10, 9.25.2018

Mr. Owens believes...

"As a nation, we are in need of educating EVERY child to their highest potential. We need to offer an avenue of hope and accomplishment to help children reach their goals. Mentorship has always been a part of my life and I hope that I will be able to leave a legacy of building up children so they won't become broken men. May our children leave us and go out into the world and make it a better place." ~ Mr. Melvin J. Owens

September 2018 Lunch and Learn

What an awesome time breaking bread and having meaningful discussions. Thank you Mr. Jim Mustain for speaking on Goal Setting. MODs were able formulate a plan of action with their mentors on how to reach and achieve their goals. I heard good discussions involving risk taking and why some people don't reach their goals. It is always a good thing to learn from other people's stories. MODs were able to set two goals in the coming school year, one academic and one personal goal they would like to achieve.

MOD Kickoff at Durham Middle School!

Men of Distinction has expanded this year to include Durham MS, with the help of the Loving Community and Mr. Jim Mustain. I am so thankful to Mr. Gary Holt and Ms. Stephanie Hall to welcome the program and help get it launched on their campus. Mr. Dan Smith, a Durham MS instructor, is leading the program and he is also a former pitcher for the Texas Rangers.

The community mentors and the Durham MODs met and got to know one another. This was an opportunity to learn expectations and norms of the program. MODs were able to ask questions and get feedback from Mr. Smith and their mentors. This group will follow a similar schedule of MOD Harmon and MOD LHS Main. I'm so excited about the expansion of this wonderful program.

Yesterday, Sept. 28th, Durham had their first Lunch and Learn. The topic covered this week was Goal Setting.
