GMS Weekly News and Notes
Weekly Recap
On Thursday, we hosted our annual Fit 4 Funds kick-off rallies in the gym. Mr. Spillane and our student leadership team put together a great plan, and our students and staff brought great positive energy and GMS school spirit to the event. You can see pictures from the rallies, and read more about Fit 4 Funds, below.

Mandatory Health Screenings
From our School Nurse:
We are planning our annual screenings to begin September 19th and continue until completed.
All grades will be having postural screenings. The purpose of this screening is to find early signs of possible spinal problems in students. This is not a diagnostic service, but is a program to identify young people who may need further medical evaluation. Female students are asked to wear a 2-piece bathing suit or halter-like sports top under their clothing to school the day of the screening. The male students will remove their shirts for screening. This permits more accurate observation of the back. All screenings are done individually in the privacy of the nurse's office or in the locker rooms.
All 7th grade students will be having hearing, vision and height/weight screenings.
If your child has any unusual findings, we will send home a referral form for them to follow up with their physician or specialist. If nothing unusual is found during the screening, you will not be contacted. However, if you are interested in the results of the screening, please call the Health Office.
These are state mandated screenings, but you may opt your child out of the screening by contacting the health office in writing or via email at darcyk@cantonma.org. Please make sure to follow up with your pediatrician so that they can complete the screening at their office. If you have any questions, please contact the health office at 781-821-5070, Ext. 3186
Transportation Updates
Once again, I am pleased to report that our buses have been almost 100% on time for both morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up for the second week in a row. We are confident that, going forward, there will not be significant delays on a regulars basis. With that said, there are some very important updates for all of our families:
- For the first two weeks of school, we dismissed grade 6 bus riders first in order to help our newest students get accustomed to the dismissal routine. Starting tomorrow, September 19th, we will be dismissing grade 8 first, grade 7 next, and grade 6 last. The afternoon "dismissal window" will also be shortened overall.
- In keeping with GMS tradition, 8th graders will be seated at the back of buses, 7th graders in the middle, and 6th graders up front. It is important to note that no student should deny an open seat to another student under any circumstances.
- While we have had very few bus delays recently, we have received reports of misbehavior on buses which prompted a number of investigations this week. We anticipate having access to video footage from buses shortly, which will streamline the investigatory process for all such reports. It is important for students and families to know that students who violate behavioral expectations while riding the bus to or from school will be subjected to disciplinary action, including potential removal from an assigned bus for a period of time.
- Finally, students who wish to go to a friend's house after school are not allowed to board a bus other than the bus to which they have been assigned. Students and families are asked to make alternative arrangements for meeting up after school. Your cooperation is much appreciated.
I ask all of our parents and guardians to review this information with your children ahead of the new week, as it will help keep the buses safe and comfortable for all.
GMS CAPT Corner
Canton Association of Parents and Teachers (CAPT) is the non-profit parent/teacher organization at GMS. Our families help to provide and enriched educational experience for our students by supplementing their daily curriculum with in-school programs, curricular and extra-curricular field trips, and cultural celebration activities. All of this is accomplished through small annual membership dues, active family fundraising efforts, and our team of dedicated volunteers. CAPT needs YOU to volunteer, so please join our first meeting if you can.
First GMS CAPT Meeting: Monday, October 3rd at 6:30PM in the GMS library.
If you have any questions, or are interested in volunteering ,please reach out to galvincapt@gmail.com
