Sartartia MS -- Exemplary Education Every Day -- 9.13.19
CELEBRATE!
Jags are on the Move!
Dear Jag Families,
You have received the first progress report and a glimpse into the hard work your children and their teachers have been doing in the classroom. I have observed many instructional strategies such as ADI Labs, small groups, hands-on strategies, and purposeful peer talks.
Yesterday, we participated in district instructional observations/classroom walkthroughs and we received lots of positive praise and instructional feedback to improve learning. The best compliments were "your teachers have such positive attitudes" and "your students are so polite and well-mannered". Relationship building is the core of great teaching and improving academic achievement. It is truly a joy to walk these halls and see the rigorous instruction every day.
We had an amazing time meeting parents during Open House last week and we hope to see you at our upcoming Parent U: Standards Based Grading, Monday night at 6 pm in the commons.
Thank you for supporting our JAGS in Volleyball and Football and a special thank you to all of the parents that showed up for our first PTO meeting this year. We also had a marvelous showing for our TURN IT GOLD week. The kids are excited to have collected over $600 to support research and awareness of pediatric cancer. You are all appreciated.

Student Spotlight
Adam Megat is a very nice, respectful and helpful student. He is described by his peers as: ‘nice,’ ‘funny,’ and having ‘a positive attitude.’ Ms. Friedel says, “Adam is quick witted, has a unique perspective on things and is always smiling!” He does his part to keep our campus clean (by picking up after himself and others) and is welcoming to others. Adam is currently taking 3 PreAP classes, three of which are for high school credit. Go, Adam!
Staff Spotlight
Ms. Hazelwood has been teaching 7th grade ELA at Sartartia for the last 3 years. She currently sponsors Jag2 which is a student organization that strives to pair and connect students with disabilities with same age peers for social activities and relationship building. She has two children named Taylor and Ava. Taylor graduated high school this past May and will be joining the Air Force in January. Ava is in 4th grade at Walker Station. They have a rabbit named Raven and two fish named Nemo and Gumball. Ms. Hazelwood’s childhood dream was to become a teacher. However she decided to continue the admin work she had been doing since high school and after 20 years, she left a very fulfilling job at MD Anderson. She decided to take the leap and follow her dream to teach. She truly feels that she found her calling in life when she became a teacher and she loves working at SMS.
Parents--Please complete the beginning of the year Online Forms
We are 331 student forms away from reaching 100%. Thank you for completing the verification forms.
To avoid having to use a forest of paper to print forms for parents to complete on the first day of school, parents may complete this annual task starting July 30. See below for details.
- Verify your child(ren)'s information in Skyward Family Access
- Download this helpful flyer (in English and Spanish) to guide you through the process
- To start the verification process, click here to go to Skyward Family Access
- NOTE 1: Please allow your children "Full Access" (FA) to district computers and the network. In order to conduct research, create projects, take certain assessments, use Schoology, use their district email account, and more, students must have full access to the district's resources
- NOTE 2: Please provide permission for your child(ren) to take surveys. As we seek to hear and listen to students' voices and opinions to make SLMS a better place to work and learn, we cannot do that if students do not have permission to take surveys. We don't do many of them, but the ones we do are important, and they originate from within the district
We appreciate all you do to make us an excellent world-class school! Please forward all questions about SKYWARD Family Access to our Data Entry Clerk, Ms. Hodson at 281-634-6323 or email michelon.hodson@fortbendisd.com

Counselors' Corner
Hey Jag Parents!
We are so excited about the start of our 2019-2020 school year!! We have BIG plans for this year: exciting new programs and learning opportunities for you and your child to help you navigate through their middle school years. We hope to see you at parent nights and other learning opportunities that we are offering this year. Be on the lookout for dates/times in the parent newsletters and at Open House this week. Below we have included some of the things that are coming up so that you are aware:
Level Changes
We will start to process level changes on Monday, September 9th. If your child would like to change their level from Pre-AP to Academic or vise versa, please send them to the students center to pick up a level change form. Please know that there are many steps to this form and the form will need to be completed before any level change is processed. A few things to note ** A conference between teacher/parent will need to happen before any level change is processed **Level changed will not be granted if a child has a 75 or above in the course, per district policy that is provided for you on the back of the form.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email your grade level counselor.
Be an SMS Mentor
We are looking for adults in our community to volunteer their time mentoring Sartartia students. We will be accepting new mentors this year at SMS until Friday, September 27, 2019. Students who are in need of a reliable, comforting person to help guide them, will be selected by staff referral. The mandatory district orientation (MUST have every 3 years) is: Wed, September 18, 2019 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM at the Fort Bend ISD Administration Building
If you have any questions regarding the application process, please reach out to: VIPS@fortbendisd.com or katherine.friedel@fortbenisd.com if you are interested in volunteering.

The link to the donation page is below. Thank you Jags!
