The Wilder Community Connection

“Inspiring Excellence as One School, One Family, and One Community!”

Welcome! September 2019, Volume 1

Welcome Wilder Wolverine Family! This is the very FIRST edition of The Wilder Community Connection! Brought to you by Jennifer Collins, your Communities In Schools (CIS) of Richmond Site Coordinator and Carolyn Clarke, your Wilder Middle School (WMS) Family Advocate.

We look forward to using this newsletter as a way to keep our community of partners and volunteers informed and connected. Please let us know if you have any ideas or information you’d like for us to communicate through our newsletter. Thank you for being a part of our Wilder Family!

Shoutouts!

HUGE Shoutout to Dana Sampson-Hayden and her team of VSU Alumni and the Henrico North Rotary who helped welcome our scholar's back for the '19-'20 school year! On the first day of school these awesome community members acted as cheerleaders and sidewalk decorators. What an awesome way to show our scholars that their community cares about them and wants them to have a positive school year! Jim Hawes and Vicky Rappold, of the Henrico North Rotary also assisted with afternoon dismissal and welcoming students for the first two days of school, THANK YOU!

Another thanks and shoutout to Jim Hawes, of the Henrico North Rotary, for hearing about our need for book bags and making a donation of 25 new book bags within 48 hours!

Wilder Needs YOU!

Volunteer Opportunities:

Coding Club Instructor

No Experience Necessary! Training provided! We are looking for an individual (or two) to lead our Girls Who Code coding club. Girls Who Code provide volunteers with everything they need...training, curriculum and more! This is the first time we have been able to offer Girls Who Code at Wilder and we could not be more excited! But don’t let the name fool you...you do not have to be a girl to lead or participate! Club will meet after school once a week on Mondays (4:05-5:10) for one hour beginning the week of October 7 and run through January. We will offer it again for the 2nd semester if possible.

Contact Mrs. Collins if interested!

“Make it Your Business” Entrepreneurship Instructor

No Experience Necessary!

Training and all materials provided through a partnership with Junior Achievement. Lessons will take place during the school day. Each program consists of 6 lessons and we would like to have 2 sessions taking place in late October or early November. Lessons do not need to be taught by the same person. This is a great opportunity to volunteer with coworkers, friends, etc.

Contact Mrs. Collins if interested!

Mentors

Have a direct impact on the life of a child and have fun doing it! One on one mentors are needed for various programs both during the school day and after school. Preferred commitment is at least 45 minutes each week but we will do our best to work with your availability.

Contact Mrs. Collins if interested!

Office, Library and Classroom Assistance

Want to make a difference but maybe not by working with students? We need help in the office, library and some classrooms. Responsibilities may include greeting visitors, putting up bulletin boards, making copies, and putting away library books just to give you an idea. Days and times are very flexible.

Contact Mrs. Clarke and/or Mrs. Collins if interested!

Wilder Fall Festival

This year's Fall Festival will be held on October 26th! We will need volunteers for a variety of activities for this fun-filled festival!
