Fifth Grade Battle of the Books: Registration Information
The annual Battle of the Books tradition with Howard County fifth grade students continues! Battle of the Books is an A+ Partnership initiative for fifth grade Howard County students. This year, students who opt to participate in this optional tradition will form teams of 5, with a self-designated adult coach. These teams will be given a set of 12 books to share, read, and discuss at their leisure. The tentative date for the culminating 'battle' of 50 questions regarding these 12 books is presently scheduled for the evening of Friday, April 28th at Merriweather Post Pavilion.
REGISTRATION OPENS AT 10:00 a.m. on MONDAY, OCTOBER 24th. If you are the coach of a team, PLEASE register your team ASAP. Registration details were sent out last week by Mrs. Hastings through Synergy. The participation number for teams has been capped at 300. If your child has formed a team with their peers their adult coach should register the entire team. The registration link will be shared here and will go live at the appointed date and time. Battle of the Book (hclibrary.org)
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Hastings. Thank you for your advanced support of this Howard County tradition!

Lisbon Halloween Celebrations
Halloween Parade
On Friday, October 28, 2022, Lisbon ES will celebrate Halloween with a few adjustments. Our annual parade and classroom activities will be limited to students and staff only. Classrooms will have fall activities but unfortunately we will NOT be unable to have food. Due to logistical concerns, student costumes MUST fit over top of your child's clothing so they can get dressed inside the classroom and independently. Please think through your child's costume choice, as they will need to put it on with little to no assistance.
Please review the following reminders/updates.
- Any costumes that perpetuate violence, have any blood, gore, scary masks, or contain any type of weapons are prohibited. Props that come with costumes that are “play weapons” are not allowed in school. This includes but is not limited to toy guns, knives, swords, sickles, pitchforks, etc.
- If you prefer that your child does not take part in the parade, please send a note to your child’s teacher and contact Mrs. Anoff at debra_anoff@hcpss.org.
- Thank you for your cooperation.
American Heart Association
We are so excited to be starting our Jump Rope Unit in PE class to get ready for our Jump Rope For Heart Event on November, 7th! This event will be held during your students’ Related Arts time at school. Lisbon students will be working hard all month to learn new jumping skills to prepare for the event! We will be explaining to the students what the American Heart Association does and why we choose to participate in this event as a school. There is an option to raise money for the American Heart Association, but the students do not need to in order to participate! That is a family decision! Be on the lookout for other opportunities to learn and participate in challenges as a family on Canvas! If you would like to check out our school website you may do so here http://www.heart.org/khc
We are so excited to see what our Heart Heros will learn this year!
The American Heart Association offers programs for the classroom and for the gym to get help kids healthy and performing better in school.

Community Night
November 18th from 6:30 -7:30 p.m.
Assembling at least 200 Thanksgiving baskets for families in our community
and HCPSS families
Our costs for turkeys, pies, and perishables are higher then previous years. Some of our large donors and businesses are unable to contribute as much as previous years.
100 baskets go to the Morgan Chaple UMC Food Pantry in Woodbine for our community. The 4-County Lions Club, who have been our partners since the beginning, provide turkeys, dairy, and potatoes for these baskets. The other 100 go to HCPSS families including Lisbon families, and we provide the turkeys, dairy, pie and potatoes. Please consider donating food or funds to support this much needed program. Each basket will be roughly $60 to fill. Over the past 5 years our Lisbon families have provided 850 Thanksgiving baskets.
Community Night is a wonderful event where our students and the community come to assemble the baskets and prepare them. We are fortunate that our children can have a hands on way to show and feel how good giving is.
The need is greater, and more families have reached out to receive baskets.

Lisbon Liaisons Program
Do you and your family:
Like to attend our LES events?
Enjoy meeting and connecting with new people?
Want to serve as a helpful point of contact for another family?
Care about creating a community that is invested in celebrating our diversity?
If so, please consider joining our Lisbon Liaison Program. This program was developed to ensure that all families at Lisbon feel welcome in our community and to encourage engagement with our community, populations:
- Families who have recently moved to the community and have a child(ren) in attendance at Lisbon.
- Elementary school families in which the adult caretakers are not conversant in English and have child(ren) in attendance at Lisbon Elementary School.
Liaison families serve as points of contact and are familiar faces for school events and for the day-to-day questions that may arise as these families move through Lisbon Elementary. The goal of the program is to ensure that all families understand that they are valuable members of our community and to close any gaps that may exist in a family’s ability to access the resources and opportunities provided by the Lisbon Elementary School community. If you are interested, please contact Ellen Bockelman at meabbock@gmail.com.
