From Mrs. Pancham's Desk

Week of November 17th-21st, 2014

Hello Families!

Hello Fifth Grade Families! I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for your continued support this school year!

This past week, was an eventful one! We began with our field trip to Pamplin Historical Park in Petersburg, Virginia. There, students had the opportunity to learn about the life of the Civil War solider. We walked through the once battle-field of the Confederate and Union soldiers, went through soldier training, saw some of the artifacts from the war, and explored what life was like in the camps during the Civil War. Parents, teachers, and students all had a great time! A HUGE "thank you" to all of the parents that accompanied us.

In class this week we learned about fictional characters. Students discovered that characters have certain traits that make them unique. We also talked about how characters can change from the beginning of a book to the end of a book. Some characters have conflicts that involve other characters, and some can be intrinsically motivated. We continued working on the visualizing strategy and identifying the different story elements while reading.

In writing, we focused on singular and plural possessive nouns. Students had a writing packet for review as this week's homework. We will continue to review possessive nouns, with an assessment scheduled for early next week.

Also, next week, students will have a writing review packet for homework with comparative adjectives practices. They will also have word study words based off their word study groups, and as always, students should be reading for a minimum of 20 minutes each night. A.R. goals will be due December 1st, 2014.

Please continue to check your child's agenda each day, and FOX Folders on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
