Reading Workshop
This week, we continued to explore the best spots to do independent reading in our classroom. We also practiced be "triple scoop retellers" during partner reading - telling the topic of our book, giving two examples of something important, and giving a reason why. When you read at home, ask your Maple to be a triple scoop reteller!
For our Shared Reading this week, we read Weather Wear For Teddy Bear. The Maples practiced reading with meaning, retelling key parts of the story, and sequencing the events.
Math Workshop
We continued to explore number stories and addition facts within 20, playing games like Five In A Row (a Bingo variation) and Top It! (a card game with addition). We also introduced Math folders and helped the Maples develop strategies for showing their work.
We are also building community in our classroom by making classroom graphs. On Monday, we created a human graph during Morning Meeting of how many teeth we've lost. On Tuesday, we extended the activity by making a graph of the same information on paper.
Writing Workshop
We introduced our Writing folders and brainstormed a list of ideas of the wonderful things we could write about. Then we created our first entries and shared in small groups.
Farm Stand!
We read Strega Nona's Harvest to prepare for our first trip to the Farm Stand. At the end of the book, Strega Nona holds a feast for the whole town, since the rest of her village did not have as bountiful a season as she did. We discussed how giving is an important part of the Compass Farm Stand, and explained that we donate our leftover food to a shelter nearby that helps feed people who don't have enough. The Maples visited the farm stand and were each able to spend $2 each, thanks to the generosity from the whole Maple Family community. Thank you!
