Principal Message
Welcome to the completion of week two. At this point we are in a regular routine at school. We are continuing to build classroom communities, which will be ongoing throughout the year. However, we are also into our regular academic schedule as well.
If you missed the very popular principal Q & A this week, you can review the video HERE. We discussed some of the most common topics that we get at school:
What do I do if my child will be absent from school (short or long-term).
How will I know my child’s progress?
How do I stay informed about what is happening at school?
Current COVID routines.
The most common question we receive in the office is about attendance/absences. We address what to do if your child is going to be absent and who to notify. We also address House Bill 410, which is the state law about attendance, which affects every family, but few families know about.
We also discussed some of the most common phrases that students may say at home about school that sometimes raise concerns at home. Those statements include:
“I don’t have homework.”
“I’m getting bullied at school”
“I’m bored”
These phrases are obvious on the surface level, but they have hidden meanings. I talk about this towards the end of the Principal Q & A. If you have heard any of those phrases, please navigate to the video to hear what they may really mean and how to respond.
Thanks again for a great start to school. I hope your child has come home excited and continues to develop relationships with the teachers and students.
Have a great weekend,
Pete Kurty, Ed. D
Principal
Glacier Ridge Information
Students in Grades K through 3rd participated in bus safety this week
Metro Park Permission Form
If you have not already done so, please complete the Glacier Ridge Metro Park Permission Form All students will travel to the Glacier Ridge Metro Park this year. Students cannot attend if they don’t have this form completed.
Unexcused Absences & Transportation Changes
Parents of students marked with an unexcused absence will receive automated notification calls. Please note: While completing a Pre-Arranged Absence Form is important and appreciated, a prearranged vacation or trip is still an unexcused absence. However, completing the form lets us account for your child and know that they are safe. It also provides advance notification to their classroom teacher so that both student and teacher can plan accordingly.
Please send all attendance and/or transportation changes to gres_attendance@dublinschools.net and cc: the classroom teacher.
QR Code Sign-in/out
Have you noticed the QR code on the purple sheet on the window by the office door? If you are signing your child in or out, please bring your smartphone with you. You can open your camera to activate the QR Code and use the google sign-in/out that appears. If you don’t happen to have your phone, we will provide a paper sign-in/out sheet.
GRE Student Leadership for Grades 4 & 5
Our Student Leadership Team is very important in building a positive culture at GRE! Our students gain leadership skills, grow their thinking, and apply these attributes in different committees that serve our school. If students are interested, they are to complete an application. Each 4th and 5th grade student has received an email explaining this process with the link to the application.(The application only accepts Dublin City School email addresses). All teachers have explained how to access the application in their student gmail as well. If they still need assistance, they can ask Mrs. Coon, School Counselor. Applications are due September 1, 2022.
Click on this link to find more information about our Student Leadership Team.
Lunch Update
As Dublin City Schools continues transition to the Sodexo catering company. You will continue to see more changes in lunch menus. You can find the menus and payment information on the GRE website > Lunch (dropdown > menus or > payschools).
Bloomz for Teacher to Parent Communication
Have you signed up for Bloomz yet? Your child’s teacher should have emailed a code to sign up with Bloomz.
The purpose is not for families to see pictures of their child (although that is sometimes nice). Rather, the purpose is for families to see the activities and instruction that is going on in the classroom. This will allow you to have more immediate conversation with your child about school, learning, and the activities they are doing each day. That way, instead of your question of, ‘What did you do at school today,’ which often it met with the response of ‘Nothing,’ you can ask, ‘How do you play the math game that you did in class today?’
Measures of Academic Progress (M.A.P.) Growth Assessments
Having the right data is a key component of individualizing instruction for each child in the Dublin City School District. The Measures of Academic Progress (MAP Growth) assessments give us the ability to measure student achievement and academic growth, independent of grade, across time. MAP Growth data is one piece of the puzzle when understanding individual strengths and areas for growth for each student. MAP Growth Assessments will be completed in grades 1-5 as part of the fall baseline assessments.
As part of parent/teacher conferences in October, your child's teacher will share with you what they have learned about your child as a reader, writer and mathematician based upon all of the evidence they have gathered about your child since the start of the school year. MAP assessments are just one piece of the evidence.
MAP Reading Fluency Dyslexia Screener
Over the next few weeks, students in grades 1 through 3 will be administered the MAP Reading Fluency Dyslexia Screener which targets foundational reading skills. This short screener will be completed online during the regular school day and will take about 20 minutes to complete. The MAP Reading Fluency Dyslexia Screener is a test type that can identify when students' performance demonstrates possible risk factors for dyslexia or other reading difficulties. It is not meant to diagnose dyslexia or other reading difficulties. We will use these results to better understand your child's individual needs and to help them progress as readers. Results from the MAP Reading Fluency Dyslexia Screener will be shared with families in October.
