Principal's Message
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Social Media (Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, etc.) continues to play a larger role in our society and we are being continually challenged to help our children use social media in a safe and respectful way. Over the past several months, administration has had to deal with escalating problems/conflicts between students based on inappropriate and disrespectful posts on social media. Therefore, educating students has become an increasing focus in Vineland High School.
Below are five points that we ask for you to discuss with your child:
It’s all public. Even when you think you are part of a “closed group,” consider what may happen if someone copies a post and forwards it to others. Conversations are never private on social media.
No such thing as anonymity. We can identify any individual on social media by tracking the IP Address. With cooperation from law enforcement, once a subpoena is obtained, it’s only a matter of time before we identify the anonymous individual.
Social media is permanent. Even though students delete their comments/posts within hours of posting, often the posts are copied, forwarded, and sent to thousands of people in a fraction of that time. Consider a social media post permanent.
Cyber threats can be considered criminal activity. Any threat and/or comments that may be perceived as a potential threat by an objective person, will heighten the awareness of school officials, law enforcement, and more. Cyber threats can be considered criminal activity and could potentially have consequences that could be difficult to recover from.
Be responsible and respectful when using social media. Too many of our students use social media inappropriately. Most of the posts we see are not elevated to a threat-level but have been found to be mean, insensitive, and harassing in nature. Our students should speak to one another online no differently than how they speak to their peers, parents, and teachers in person. Remember to be respectful when interacting with others.
I am asking that parents reiterate these important points with their children. Unfortunately, we have had far too many uncomfortable parent meetings where students, good students for that matter, have gotten themselves in a lot of trouble as a result of social media misuse. The phones our kids carry today can be dangerous and too often are used as weapons.
Consequences:
This is no joking matter! We take threats, potential threats, and acts of aggression (fighting, verbal disputes, etc.) very seriously and will NOT tolerate any behavior that harms the safety and welfare of our students. It only takes one regrettable post and/or comment for your child to lose a lot of privileges here at school. Vineland High School administration will take the following steps:
Students will be suspended out-of-school (OSS)
Students may be placed at Cunningham Alternative School
Vineland Police Department will be notified and students may be arrested
Students will lose privileges of attending/participating in school end of the year events (prom/ graduation), activities, field trips, and any other co-curricular events deemed appropriate by administration
It is my hope that through the efforts of home and school, that our students will use social media in a safe and respectful manner. I strongly encourage you to have a conversation with your son or daughter.
Thank you for your cooperation and please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
