Byron USD Monthly Newsletter
December 2020
Superintendent's Message
Dear Byron Families,
Living through the pandemic has become our new normal and the rhythms of our work are cycling within that. This is not necessarily good or bad; it is just our state of being at this time. I continue to believe that we will return to a greater resemblance of how things were in the near future.
Writing newsletter articles has always been an important part of what is going on in the current climate and provides information about components of education that often seem foreign from the outside in. For what seems to be so long, but in reality, is only a few short months, our worlds have been consumed with the current pandemic and the news around it. Each month, I think something else will draw to focus…just not yet.
Naturally, this situation, like many others of the past, draws concern for its impact on our students and their future and often too, causes frustration about our lack of control. These emotions are not exclusive to anyone of us. All of us at one point or another have or will feel them.
I continue to celebrate the work of our students, the commitment of our staff and the support of our community in this journey. I know that everyone is doing their best and will continue to do so and I also know that in spite of this we will need to find ways to continue to close gaps amongst students as we move forward.
It is important that we continue to follow the Contra Costa Public Health's recommendations: social distance when you can and mask up when you can't; use good hygiene including washing your hands frequently; stay home when you are sick or when anyone in your household is sick and get tested when you have symptoms. Our success to reopen our schools for in-person learning will depend on our willingness as a community to follow this guidance in our daily lives.
November is also a time for showing our care for others. Whether it's the long rides on planes, trains and automobiles (or for today's many virtual visits, the technology tutorials and glitches) we endure to reach loved ones, or the turkeys and casseroles and pumpkin pies we take time to bake, we make the effort because we care. Please make the effort during this season to care for your neighbors by keeping our community healthy.
I am grateful for all of you and hope you have a happy Thanksgiving!
Respectfully,
Reyes Gauna, Ed.D., Superintendent
