The History of Baseball
By: Joey Dials
How it all started
No one knows exactly how Baseball was started, but it is pretty similar to an old English game called "Rounders". Rounders was an English game that was played in the 1600's and had a lot of similarities to Baseball, but one difference was that in Rounders, you had to hit the players with the ball.
Famous Baseball Players
They are many players in the game of baseball who hold their place in history. Barry Bonds is one of them because he has hit the most home runs in a single season holding the record of 762 homers. Lou Gehrig was another baseball great. He has done a number of things like hit 4 home runs in a single game in June of 1932, he won the Triple Crown in 1934 when he led the AL in batting average (.363), home runs (49), and runs batted in (165).
Professional Leagues of Baseball
The most popular league in baseball is MLB, or Major League Baseball. One part of the MLB is the AL, or the American League. Some teams from the AL are the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees, and the Chicago White Sox. Another part of the MLB is the NL, or the National League. Some teams from the NL are the Chicago Cubs (Go Cubbies!), the Cincinnati Reds, and the St. Louis Cardinals (Go Cubbies!).
Significance in American Culture
"Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn Baseball." That is a quote from Jacques Barsun, the Social Commentator, wrote more than a quarter of a century ago.
