Room 314

April 14, 2014

Now that AIMS is over, we can get back to business. It's a crazy start to the week. I will not be at school on Monday. Mrs. Sorenson will be subbing for me. We will not have classes on Tuesday because I will be testing.

Our field trip to see "Schoolhouse Rock" is coming up fast. If you have not turned in your permission slip, please do that this week. It should be a fantastic show!

Have a great week!

"How you learn has nothing to do with how smart you are. You have greatness in you. You just need to discover what that is." - Henry Winkler

On Monday we will finish unit 7. We will begin unit 8 on Wednesday. Unit 8 focuses on blends: bl, st, mp, gr, etc. Our goal is to be charting the students’ fluency 2-3 times per week. On Monday, we will read a News 2 You article called "Kite Month." On Wednesday, we will work in groups to answer the review questions and find text based support. On Thursday, we will read a story called "Traveling Shower Service Rolls Into Town."

6th Grade Writing

This week we will be starting persuasive essay research projects on different types of renewable energy. Students will research fossil fuels and an alternative energy. Their goal is to convince the reader why their alternative energy is better than fossil fuels. Students will select a renewable energy to do research on. They can choose either wind, solar, geothermal, biomass or hydropower energy. Students will look for research to explain how the renewable resource is converted into energy. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the alternative energy? They will also explain why the resource is the best solution to our energy problems. We will also continue to work with Four Level Grammar. This is a program that is being used throughout the school to immerse children in grammar. We will spend 5-10 a day on grammar.

2nd and 1st Grade Reading

This week, we will begin substep 1.6. This substep introduces suffix-s. Please have your complete the fluency packet at least twice a week. Directions are on my website. The more your child practices this packet, the more quickly your child will progress. Please do not skip this important part of homework.
