MES Weekly School Newsletter

Dear Parents and Guardians,
As you know, safety at Midway is always a top priority, and we have many practices in place to keep our students and staff safe each day. We are now adding another layer of security for our school. As part of our procedures, we will be implementing a new access control system on Monday, September 16, 2019.
After 7:40 a.m. all doors will be locked and visitors will be required to “buzz in” to gain access to the building through a closed circuit monitoring system. Visitors will only gain access through the second left door of the main entrance.
Directions for how to use this system are listed below:
1. To the left of the door is an intercom/camera.
2. Press the button on the intercom.
3. Place yourself in front of the camera on the panel.
4. Someone will see you and will respond verbally.
5. They can then release the door for you to enter the building.
6. You will then report to the kiosk window for further assistance.
We want to make sure that everyone enters the building quickly upon arrival. You can help us by identifying yourself and providing your child’s name. Once you have been given access, you will enter the kiosk lobby. At this time you will be asked to provide your driver’s license if you are dismissing a child or visiting a classroom.
We ask for your patience and understanding as we all get acquainted with this new system. We also remind you that all children arriving after the 7:40 a.m. tardy bell need to be escorted inside as you will need to go through the above process to enter your child into the building. Please remember that we have your child’s best interest at heart.

Way to go, Midway! Last year, the school-wide service project led by fifth grade raised $183 for CampMates, a summer day camp for children and teens ages 4-21 that is provided by the Autism Academy of SC. The camp program is designed for children with social skills deficits, Asperger’s, Autism, ADHD, social anxiety and learning disabilities.

Dear Midway Families,
We hope you and your family have had a great start to the 2019-2020 school year! We want to take this opportunity to thank you for all the ways you support Midway Elementary. Because of your financial support we are able to provide funds for professional support, field trips, school supplies, staff appreciation events and much more. We could not do it without you!
Last year alone we were able to fund:
· $15,000 in teacher supplies reimbursements and grants which helped pay for Chromebooks, book sets, art supplies, math manipulative and special education skill development materials
· $15,000 in Professional Support (teacher development, training, etc.)
· $14,200 in Field Trips
· $5,000 in Staff Appreciation including teachers, guidance, health, administrative assistants, cafeteria and custodial staff
· AND MUCH MORE
We thank you for all your past donations that have made this possible and we want to continue to be able to provide this support to our students, teachers and staff.
We recognize that your time is precious so this fall we will again have a direct donation fundraiser. We are not asking you to sell ANYTHING! 100% of the proceeds go to Midway, NO WORK is required from you and your donation is TAX DEDUCTIBLE!
As a reminder, this will be the primary FALL Fundraiser. Boosterthon will continue to be our primary SPRING Fundraiser. By popular demand, we will also offer a holiday online auction. Based on historical profits from past Fall Fundraisers, our goal is to raise $20,000.
We hope this fundraising method makes life easier for you and your family! As always, THANK YOU for your generosity and help in supporting Midway and the PTO!

Create your own Tabata!
Midway Elementary Physical Education classes have been performing Tabatas for the last 5 years. Tabata training is one of the most popular forms of high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Our Tabata exercises last only 4 minutes, but it's likely to be one of the longest 4 minutes you've endured. The structure of the program is as follows:
- Work out hard for 20 seconds
- Rest for 10 and get in the next body position
- Complete 8 rounds
You push yourself as hard as you can for 20 seconds and rest for 10 seconds. This is one set. You'll complete eight sets of each exercise.
You can do pretty much any exercise you wish. You can do squats, push-ups, burpees or any other exercise that works your large muscle groups. Have your child create a Tabata and choose 8 exercises and then play the Tabata music in the link below.
