The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - October 25, 2020
A Note from Principal Welch
I hope you have all enjoyed this crisp, fall weekend. I have personally loved the sunshine and I am also a fan of taking a walk and enjoying all the colors the season has to offer. This is a beautiful time of year!
I want to point special attention to this Thursday! We not only have our regular book circulation, but we also have our materials pick-up event. If you want to pick-up your library books during your materials pick-up time, please email Mrs. Sterling or I and we will add the library books to your student's materials bag. I am really looking forward to seeing you this week! As part of our materials pick-up event, students will also receive a fun goody bag from our PTA! I love our Sailors community!
At our PTA meeting, I heard some feedback focusing on how things have been going with remote learning. Overall, I am hearing a lot of positive feedback. Thank you! I will say this is not easy for any of us. One point I did hear is how much you appreciate having schedules for the week, as that helps you as a family. We agree with you. All grade levels are sharing overall schedules for the week on their Schoology page and/or via email. Teachers are often making final instructional decisions throughout the day and therefore, the specific lesson content may change up to the lesson beginning. This is part of the monitoring and adjusting that all educators do and I support this practice.
I thank you for supporting our teachers and all they are doing to lift their instruction and moving that to a remote setting. There are so many details that teachers are thinking through. If you would like to talk further about successes or challenges you are facing, please feel free to reach out via email or you can also schedule an appointment with me by visiting this link: https://outlook.office365.com/owa/calendar/JenniferWelchPrincipal@nsd.org/bookings/
I hope you all have a great week ahead and look forward to seeing many of you this Thursday at our Materials pick-up event. Don't forget this coming Sunday, November 1, Daylight Saving time ends. This is when we set our clocks BACK 1-hour.
Jen Welch, Principal

- All families will need to pick up materials in their vehicle, via the front of the school, in our car pick-up loop.
- Prior to picking up, prepare a sign with your child’s LAST name written clear and BIG. Please display the sign on your passenger side of your dash, so that it is clearly visible to staff.

All staff will be wearing a face covering and maintaining social distancing to make sure we are doing all we can to keep each other and you safe.
What will you be picking up?
Teachers have been preparing items that you should anticipate using between now and the end of December. All students will also be receiving a special goody bag from our Cottage Lake PTA!
** If you need other supplies that are not provided, please do reach out to a member of our office staff, or myself, and we will do our best to supply you with the needed materials. These items could include a student desk, an appropriate chair or alternative seating option, or if you need more school supplies. Please reach out if we can assist you in creating a workspace for your student that also matches their size.
Free Tutoring by Woodinville High School (WHS) students
The club will offer support with computer science classes, regular help on math or English homework, languages (such as Spanish), and teaching students how to use Schoology (turning assignments in, etc.). The tutors will be recording all of their tutoring sessions, following district policy for zoom meetings, and all tutors must undergo a 1-hour training session before they start to tutor.

Becoming a volunteer
At Cottage Lake, we have always had a very strong foundation of classroom and PTA volunteers. This year, we are all thinking outside the box and looking for new, creative ways we can welcome volunteers into the remote classrooms. As our classrooms continue to establish routines and systems, teachers will be ready to think about how volunteers could be helpful to them.
To prepare for becoming a volunteer, there are several steps we need you to complete. One important note is that our background check form will need to be updated EACH YEAR! In the past, we have asked for them to be updated every two years, but to keep our information the most up-to-date, this is a shift we are making district-wide.
Please visit this NSD LINK to find all the steps you will need to follow to complete your volunteer paperwork. Please click on the bar that says, "Online Volunteer Application Process" for all the steps that need to be completed.
Thank you for considering becoming a Cottage Lake volunteer!
Does your Cottage Lake Elementary student need a device for online learning? Please use the link below to sign up and sign the waiver. After you submit your form, Mr. Paganini will be in contact with you to set a pick-up time for you. For students in Kindergarten & Grade 1, we are issuing iPads. For students in Grade 2 through Grade 5, we are issuing Chromebooks. Students will keep these devices at home until we return to school.
Meals during remote learning and hybrid learning
Beginning Wednesday, September 9, we are offering free meals for ALL children ages 18 and younger. Students do not need to be enrolled in the Northshore School District to receive meals. This is GREAT news for each of our families; these are your tax dollars at work. I am so pleased this funding has been continued, allowing us to extend these meal services until the end of December.
Please visit our District website for more information about how and when to place your order, times and locations for meal pick-up, pricing, and how to apply for free and reduced-price meals.
For quick links:
- CLICK HERE to place an order for DAILY MEALS. [The order window time will be 2:00 PM-11:59 PM the day prior to meal pick-up. Order include breakfast and lunch, including 16oz of milk. Orders placed for a Friday pick-up will also include meals for the weekend.]
- CLICK HERE to place an order for WEEKLY MEAL PACKS. [Weekly Meal Packs will include breakfast and lunch for an entire week, including a gallon of milk. The order window will open at 2:00 PM every Wednesday and close at 2:00 PM every Thursday. Pick up for these meals will be on Wednesday the following week.]
Please consider ordering food! Our district is committed to feeding our children during this challenging time.
Free & Reduced Applications
