The Fairview Connection
JANUARY 13, 2023
MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and enjoyed having some extended time with your families while we were off for the two week winter break. While it was nice to have some time to rest and rejuvenate, it has been so great to see our students again this week! We’ve had a productive week together and are looking forward to the growth and learning to come over these coming winter months. With the new year underway, we have a lot to share with you regarding upcoming events and school news, so please take a moment to read more below! Don’t forget that we are off of school on Monday as we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Have a nice weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal
Winter Assessments: Next week on Wednesday and Thursday, students will participate in winter MAP assessments in reading and math as a check in point for teachers to use to help measure student growth and identify areas of focus for instruction. We also use this data to help us determine who might need some additional support or enrichment along with the other data we will collect this winter. The following week on January 24th, students will participate in a short reading fluency assessment and over the next two weeks, they will have had the chance to take the CBMath CAP assessment to get a short snapshot of their current math skills. These assessments are all taken three times annually and help us determine who might need additional support. This data is very helpful to us as a school as we continue to monitor our students’ progress and support them as learners.
Grade Level Expectations Assemblies: On Wednesday of this past week, each grade level met with Mrs. Durkan and me for our mid-year expectations review. We take time to celebrate the success our students have shown during the first half of the school year, review areas where we feel we can still grow as a school, and then students set goals for who they want to be in 2023 as it relates to their time in the classroom, at lunch and recess and in our Fairview Community using this goal setting sheet. For your reference, our Fairview expectations can be found at this link.
Falcons Read! in January: As we continue our year long Falcons Read! program, in January, students are encouraged to complete the Hot Chocolate Reading Challenge! Packets are coming home with students on Friday with more information. If students complete the challenge, they can return their mug and have it posted in Fairview’s display case! Look at the packet sent home today for more information.
PTO Sponsored Author Visit with Kate Hannigan: Coming up this month on January 31st, author Kate Hannigan will be coming to Fairview to visit with students in the LRC to talk more about her life as a writer and inspire our students in their own pursuits as writers. If you are interested in purchasing a book for your child that Kate will sign and have delivered to Fairview, click this link and follow the instructions provided.
PTO Science Fair: Our annual Science Fair is coming up on February 22nd from 6:00-7:30 pm. This is such an exciting and meaningful event for our students and we hope your child decides to participate. Participation is optional, and if you would like your child to participate, please review this informational flier and sign up by January 30th using this link.
Kindergarten Registration: Kindergarten enrollment for the 2023/2024 school year is officially open at Westbrook School for Young Learners. Visit this link for information about the pre-enrollment process, residency verification, and registration.
Please contact Jessica Talbot (jtalbot@d57.org) or Cindy Buell (cbuell@d57.org) if you need assistance with language translation of any of the flyers that appear in the newsletter.
DRESS FOR OUTDOOR RECESS
As the weather turns cooler, please make sure your children are dressed to go out for recess. Unless it is raining or the temperature /wind chill is too cold (15 degrees or below, real-feel temperature) the students will go out every day for recess. Please write your student’s last name on a tag in their coat and snowpants.
All students will go out with their class unless we have a doctor’s note limiting their participation. If a student has been ill and he/she is not feeling well enough to participate in all the activities of the school day, perhaps another day at home will insure a healthy return to school.
JANUARY FALCONS READ! CHALLENGE
IMPORTANT REMINDER FROM NURSE BRUNNING
In order to prevent the spread of germs, it is important that any student who vomits, has diarrhea, or has a fever be kept home for at least 24 hour after the symptoms end. They must be 24 hours free of these symptoms without the use of medication to relieve the symptom. If you have any questions about this please feel free to contact Kelly Brunning.
