What's Happening in the Agora HS Department
It's PROM Season!
All High School students (grades 9-12) at Agora Cyber Charter School are cordially invited to attend this year’s prom. The senior class determined the Beauty and the Beast theme.
With the Harrisburg area prom already past and Pittsburgh's prom occurring this weekend, there are still two upcoming prom events that any student can attend. Each person who attends prom must purchase a ticket and complete the respective permission slip. Students may bring up to three guests between the ages of 14-21 (with proper ID). Ticket sales will close two weeks before Prom dates. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your Family Coach.

IRELAND THROUGH THE EYES OF A BRIT LIT TEACHER
By: Samantha Miller
HIGH SCHOOL BRITISH LITERATURE TEACHER
I went to Ireland to learn about the writers of the past, but I brought home an experience to share with my students worth so much more. There is a reason Ireland is home to the literary greats. It is an island landscape that fuels the imagination, with a people who burn to tell its stories. In fact, storytelling is such a part of the culture I found in Ireland that it’s impossible to sort the stories from the places and the people.
From the moment we arrived at the Dublin airport we were surrounded by storytellers who loved to spin a good yarn, beginning with the cab driver who took us to the hotel. As we plowed through downtown traffic (a disorienting sight to see whiz by on the right), our cabbie kept up a constant stream of banter about the famous buildings, statues, and sights we passed— seamlessly blending history, humor, personal experience (and with even a bit of what I suspect was flat-out fantasy). We were introduced to the “Flirt in the Skirt,” the “Crank on the Bank,” and the ill-conceived and never-ending punchline that is the millennium monument, the “Stiletto in the Ghetto.” As I listened to stories of failed political rebellions, ancient fairy shenanigans, and childhood adventures played along the River Liffey I began to understand that these writers from the past were born into a culture of storytelling that remains a fundamental way of life for the Irish today.
Agora Day Out at Drexel
On April 24 Agora sponsored an ADO (Agora Day Out) event at Drexel University which included a production of Shakespeare’s MacBeth. High School American Literature teacher Pam Maio attended the outing and had this to say about the experience: "The kids and families who were there had a great time. The Philadelphia Shakespeare Company was amazing. After the show they sat down to answer questions from the students. There were several other schools there as well, so the auditorium was almost full. After the Q & A I got to sit down with most of our Agora attendees for lunch and chat with them which was so nice. Drexel then gave a presentation about the university, and we went on a tour of the campus. It was really awesome--a great opportunity for our students."
We are getting close to Graduation 2018! We will be celebrating graduation on Wednesday, June 13 at 4:00pm at the Hershey Giant Center. We would love for you to be a part of the celebration! More information about graduation can be found at the Agora website.
Agora Grand Canyon Trip!
Your student has the opportunity to take a fun and educational trip to the Grand Canyon and Zion National Parks with his/her class next year. Ericka Nicol will be leading the group along with other adults as needed. The trip is scheduled for 5/25/19 to 5/29/19. The professional traveling company Grand Classroom is being used to plan every aspect of the trip. Visit the school trip web page (link is below this article), click “Find My Trip/Register” and search “Agora” in Pennsylvania.
For the price of $2388 everything on the trip will be covered—all transportation, hotel accommodations, meals, sightseeing, and evening activities as well as medical insurance. Price is based on 20 full-paying travelers. A registration fee of just $99 secures your spot and goes toward your full payment. **Deposit deadline is June 8, which is coming soon!
If you have any questions, contact Grand Classroom at 434-975-2629 or Agora staff member Ericka Nicol.
The Agora Parent-Teacher Organization was recently launched, and regularly scheduled meetings and round-table events have been held so that parents, guardians, and learning coaches could collaborate together, meet Agora staff, and take an active role as key stakeholders in the Agora community. Staff members are hoping to build on the PTO foundation and establish parent-ambassadors for Agora’s Back-to-School events in the fall. Also needed are council members for the next school year. Information on ways you can become involved as well as previous meeting recordings can be found on the APTO page of the Agora website or by clicking here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/AgoraPTO1718/
