We Love Catholic Schools Sweepstakes - How Will the Money Raised be Used?
We get 100% of the proceeds raised from the "We Love Catholic Schools Sweepstakes," and we will be using the money to purchase for our students virtual reality kits. Here's how the kits will enhance each student's educational experience.
Virtual reality (VR) can be used in classrooms to enhance student learning and engagement. VR can transform the way educational content is delivered; it works on the premise of creating a virtual world — real or imagined — and allows users to interact with it, not just see it.
Teachers can take students on virtual field trips, transporting students to faraway and even inaccessible parts of the planet, or even the universe. With these simple headsets and a smart phone, students can actively explore anything from Machu Picchu to outer space or the deep sea. For example, after studying the different ecosystems around the world, students can then visit these ecosystems in VR, allowing them to look around themselves and really explore.
Besides just visiting faraway or unreachable places, students get a chance to experience cultures, face social injustice, and confront racism and sexism more realistically than in the pages of their textbooks. Students can virtually walk the path Jesus took to the Cross, or stand on the balcony where Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated. They can explore the scenes they can only read about in novels.
Virtual reality has been shown to increase altruistic actions outside of the classroom as students transition from passive reading to active experience. Another major benefit of using virtual reality in education is to excite students about the subject matter because they are personally immersed in it, and encouraging creativity as they interact with their virtual environment.
